Rock Hill; June 6.?Senator

lie did not seem inclined to notice
i,he interview with Senator Mc- (
Laurin, appearing in The State
a nnnciilnru
J A VUIO 11J Wl II IU ^ AAV w
the stand which McLaurin takes
to he so puerile as to he heneath
notice and feels that it would not
he dignified in him to reply to it
at all. After talking on other 8ub?
jects and evidently meditating upon
this, he again stated that after
thinking it over he did not feel
that he had any answer at all to
make to it. The interview, he
says, comes in too round ahout a
way to take as a challenge and
he considers that the action taken
at Gaffney covered the whole situation.
There he met his oppo
nent's quibbles as to the form of
the paper sent to the governor and
gave what he considered an un
qualified resignation. At Gaffney
he forced McLaurin to "jump
over-board with him believing
that McLaurin could not swim "
' It seems," said he, "that McSweeney
has thrown him a rope
and hauled him in, though the
matter seems to hare l>een ar
ranged by mutual friends, aud
while I do not mean to charge
Gov. McSweeney with sinister
motives, be has been unduly influenced
and has transcended his
' authority."
When asked if he thought there
was a possibility of the junior senator
taking the initiative in this
matter and sending in his resignation
first: Senator Tillman
hooted at the idea, saying that
after having turned tad and run
before, that would be boy's play
in McLaurin. W. A. P.

Japt. Mooney Will Prosecute
B. B. Evans.
lMie State.
It was announced yesterday
that Capt. J. A. Mooney, of
Ureenville, had heen employed to
assist in the prosecution of Major
Barnard B Evans, who is accused
of hav'ng killed Capt. J. .J.
Uriftin April L3'h last.
This promises to be a royal
le^al battle. There are ehxpient
men and able lawyers employed
on both sides. The counsel 1 or
the defence fonsists of ( \ il (inoriMi
.Johnstone, of Newberry, and
Major W. T. (Jurv, of Augusta,
Gh. The prosecution is represented
by younger men, but Col. O
L. Sehuinport has u tine record
as a solicitor and Capt. Mooney's
success is attested Vy the fact
that lie is now employed in 21)
homicide trials.
This promises to be a very
sensational trial. It cannot bo held
at this term of court as the p-esiding
officer,.Judge Kirnest Gary, is
a first cousin of Major Kvans
.lodge Watts, who will preside at
the November term of court, is a
distant relative of the accused,
but it is said that it. is not a tie of
consanguinity and will not prevent
the trial at that time.
It requires money to retain
lawyers in a big case like this. It
is understood that a number ol
the late ('apt. Griffin's friends ir
the city have contributed to tin
fund to aid the prosecution.
