m.?The most disastrous fire in
the history of this city began yes
terday shortly after noon in a
small factory, from a defective
wire, according to the best be
lief, and burned for nearly ten
hours. In that time a property
damage estimated from $10,000,000
to $15,000,000 was effected.
According to the city map, one
hundred and thirty blockw were;
burned, many of them in the'
beartof the business and residence (
section. The estimate of houses 1
to the block is 10, hence 1,300 of ;
them went up in smoke.
Many of the finest public and
private buildings were destroyed,
including hotels,theatres,churches
and residences.
The mayor at a late hour stated
that he estimated the loss at $15,000,000,
and that 10,000 to 15,000
people were homeless.

premises the tire originated, and
who was one of the heaviest losers,

horror of the tituation. He ran
around in a circle with the trunk

and died. Women ran through
the etreet tearing their hair and
clothea, and in teveral instances
had almost denuded themselves
when they were caught by friends
and led to places of safety. Horses '
hitehed to trucks could not be cut
loose quickly enough and many of 1

river oq the south, u distance of

the desolated area >s thirteen
blocks. Withia this space practically
everything is blackened ruins.
On Bay street, the principal part
of trade, the Western Union
Telegraph company's building is
the first going west. Everything
east of Liaurel on Bay is gone.
At 10:15 Q'clock last night the
fire was under control, having
practically buraed itself out. The
suburban settlements, with the
exception of La Villa, are intact.
La Villa vras badly hurt. The
extent of the damage cannot be
told until tomorrow. Thousands
of persons ire on the streets tonight
homeless, with practically
all of their worldly possessions
upon their backs. The depots of
the ruilroads situated in the south
eastern section, have been turned
into temporary lodging houses
and hospitals. Luckily the weather
is fine, so that there will be no
suffering on that score.
