Effect ef Last Week's Weather on the Crops of the State. Section Director Bauer, at Co lumhiu has issued the following weekly bulletin: The week ending Monday, April 29, averaged from 10 to 13 do^ grees pei day colder than usual, with an extreme minimum of 34 degrees at Greenville. There were light frosts on the 22nd, 23d, and 24th in places, and a trace of ice in Colleton county. The frosts killed cotton that was up, cucumbers and melons, yellowed corn, checked the growth of truck and gardens, hut was apparently not injurious on fruit. There were light, scattered showers on the 22d and 23d ovei the csntral and western counties, and snow flurries on the same dates in tho extreme northwestern portions. The ground wis too wet to work, from the previous j week's heavy rains over the western half of the State, until the middle of the and only] frfun two to four days plowing! could he done. As the soil dries! it becomes baked and hard. Along the coast, and fo?* about fifty miles! inland, there is need of rain to supply moisture to germinating j seeds and growing crops, and for transplanting tobacco. Bottom lands are not yet dry enough to plow. There was more than the usual amount of sunshine, and the winds were general'y light, but were chilling. Corn has poor and irregular stands, owing to poor germination and the fields have been plowed up and replanted. The cool weath r checked its growth and c used much to turn yellow. In the southeastern countii s only has cultivation become general. Up. land corn is not all planted. Cotton planting made slow progress, and much emains to plant in the western counties, while over the eastern and central counties first planting is about finished. Stands are very poor. A large portion of the cotton that was planted previous to lust week's heavy rains and subsequent cold weather will have to he replanted, as the young plants that were up have died to a large extent, while newly sprouted and unsprouted ?*?ed are rotting in the ground. There is a general scarcity of *ewd for replanting. With limited exceptions wheat *nd oats continue to look promising and tie stooling well. Oats ire heading over the southeastern counties, and over limited localities elsewhere. Sweet potatoes ire rotting in beds. White polotoMCi n nrtaoi* ^ ? " ' Lttvwvri ci|>|'cni \>\r i?C WCII . Melons havf poor stands. Truck needs wanner weather and more moisture, but shipments ot peas, beans and strawberries are goin?r forward, the latter ripening slowly. The acreage of strawberries is smaller than usual. The coin mercial peach crop will not be as large ns expected, but generally peaches, peas and plums have been only slightly injured by the prevailing unseasonable weather.
