last session he thought the parents '

and ho felt sure the people would resent
it. He spoke of the many
families who had left the cotton <

Veteran Wesley Melvoown Killed '
by a Freight Train.

Mr. Wesley McKeown, an old
citizen whose honae was near
Hickory drove, was killed bv the

west of Vorkville. The deceased
had been in Yorhville and left the

reason he concluded to go to his ; <

ha had gotten to the point on the j t
railroad where he was killed, lie . (
was utrnck by the train, knocked ' t
from the track and so seriously ! t
injured that he died at about a I *
o'clock. i

doubt, while on his journey, came 1
to :i colored man's home, where
he linked for admittance in order )
to warm km body, but upon being s
refused con'inued his tramp until p
struck by the train. Upon recover- f
ing consciousness, after being
knocked otr the track, lie called
aloud for help and the same colored
man who had refused him admittance
to his hone responded, r
and seeing his condition, sailed. h
other neighbors, who sat by the ! a
old man until death came to relieve e<

him of hi* suffering*.
Tim coroner was notified end
Wednesday an inquest was held
over the body, but we could not
learn the form of the verdict.
Mr. McKoewn had acquaintances
in this city, who knew him
as a citizen and Confederate
soldier. He was a tine old man,
perhaps 70 yeurs of age His
tragic death is a very sal atTiir.
He leaves a considerable family
all bis children being grown.

passed on many hills since I
wrote last. Some wekilleo and
some we passeo. The following
is a list of Acts raulied on the
7th instant by the Mouse and
Senate, and will become laws
when signed bv the Governor:
To ratify amtnendment to the
constitution to authorize the
Lieneral Assembly, to provide by
law, for comdemnation of land
for drainage. To provide for a
juilding and State exhibit at
South Carolina and We-t Indian
Kxposition. To validate drawing
of all jurors for the > , ar
11101. Ceding to city of Charlesion
certain Marsh lands for a
naval station. To prevent sale
if goods within one half of a
mile of a religious camp ground.
To require the county commissioners
to show nature of claim
n published reports. To require
ill courts to take Judicial notice
if laws and ordinances of any
town, or city. Ceding lands on
Sullivan's Island to the ITiited
States Government. To regulate
bonds of public oflicers. Thre
were other Acts ratified at the
same time, but not of interest to
our county.
The child labor bill lias been
brought up in the Senate, and it
passed that body by one vote.
Some of the senators who pushed
the bill sav it is for humanity's

passed, and they amended the
bill so that if a widow will mak<
oath that she has to have her
children to help earn a living
she can work them at any age.?
YVhete is the humanity in that*.
If humanity doesn't reach or
phan children who floe;'
it reach? I believe there is murn
political bunkum in it than any
thing else.
By a vote of 66 to 33 the House
infused to pass a bill requiring
every child between the ages ol
7 and \'l years of age to attend
school three months in each year.
The white chi' !ren of our county
do that now and 1 did not want
to force thousands of low-country
negroes into the schools for
the whites to pay for; so 1 voted
against the bill.
The House has passed a bill
to aporopriate one hundred
thousand dollars more for the
20ifimou schools, which is the
Drily poor man's school. The
House also voted two hundred
thousand dollars to pension
confederate soldiers. I can't tell
what the senate will do with
