Three Net States
Arizona, New Mexico ami Okla- I
horua to Cotna int<> the Union.
Atlanta Evening Journal.
It K?enis prohttblo that three i
states will heceated at the present
lentiion of congress in apite of
it brief duration and the presa of
other mattera for consideration.
Both the Democratic ami He ;
publican parting in their platform*
this year pledged themselres to
the admission of Arizona, New |
Mexico and Oklahoma Both par
ties seemed to want this done as
soon as possible, tie Republicans
asking for it at an "early date''
and'tho Democrats "immediately."
Bille have been introduced proriding
that the three territories
named shall bo clothed with statehood
Senator Fairbanks is the
author of the bill t ? admit Okla
homa and Indian Territory as oee
ntato, whereas Oklahoma is safely I
Republican.
Party considerations have usually
controlled in the admission
of states and will have their effect
Upon the pressnt congress.
The state proponed hy Senator
Fairbanks would hare a popula
tion of nearly 809,000, Oklahoma
haying grown from 61,384 in
189o to 398,245 in 1 0<?0, ami tlie
Indian Territory from 185,182 to
301,960.
The general idea that the popu
1 at i on of the Indian Territory is
composed mainly of Indiana is a
ereat mistake. A* a matter of
fact, of the 391,96<> people in
that territory only 56,033 are Indiana,
or only one seventh. There,
are only 5,927 Indiana among
Oklahoma's 398,425 people. Put
t i ii tr these territories together
would gi*e the proposed new state
a population greater than that of
eighteen of the present atates.
Neither Arizona nor New Mexico
has anything like ho strong a
claim to statehood a-. Oklahoma
comnineu with the Indian Terri
torv, or even alone.
While Arizona'* population has,
increased about 1"0 percent in 10
years, it is vet luit 122,212 New
Mexico's increase liar been only!
26 per cent, its population at
present being 11*3.777. Still,
both Arizona and New Mexico,
not onlv have more population
but more substantial qualifications
for statehood than cither Wyoming
or Nevada. It is likely that j
we shall soon have forty-eight'
states instead of lorty live.
