Too Many Pardons.
We believe that Gov Miles B.
MoSweeny is a kind hearted man.
He is honest, and trie 4 to do his
duty; hut it is evident that he has
a mistaken idea on the subject of
granting pardons.
Yesterday morning The Herald
said that a pardon had been granted
to Thackston, of Greenville, the
man who was conv icted after slaying
his second victim

trials in which all of the evidence
is fully presented and fairly commented
upon l>v learned counsel
for the state and for the defence
and an impartial jury has returned
a verdictof guiltv, that the man
convicted and sentenced, ought
to be made to perform the sentence
which the court has imposed.
When the pardoning power was
entrusted to the governor it was
never contemlated that lie would
allow his symphathies to be worked
upon. It was never contemplated
that he would exercise this power
! to set aside the verdict of a jury
unless evidence was produced made !
There is not the slightest doubt
(to show that some mistake had
been) in the world as to Kzoll
I Thaekston'a guilt. He does not
deny it. That being the case, we
ask in all seriousness, what right
has the Governor to pardon a man
who has been duly convicted with
no evidence that would tend in the
least to arous* a doubt as to the
justness of his sentence.
The governor of the state ought
not to be placed in the position of ^
the piteous of the wives and the
daughters and the sisters of those

who have been convicted of crime.
It ought not to he possible for the
governor If) issue 11 pardon merely '
because being kind hearted he has
allowed his sympathies to be work,

A reward of $100 has been offered
for the arrest, with evidence
to convict, of ltobert Woodward,
who killed Thomas Lemmon, in
Union county.
A reward of $100 for the arrest
of Molev Jackson, who killed
Ach Mcliae in Marlboro count .
A reward of $50 for the arrest
of Will Watson who is wanted for!
the killing of Mary Watson, in
York county.
A reward of $50 has been offer
ed for Ode Helvin who is wanted
for the killing of Jesse McNair. j
A reward of $100 has been offered
for the arrest of John Dean
who is wanted for the killing of
Davis Kerner, in Greenwood
county.
A reward of $100 has been offered
for the arrest of Jeff Turner
