ningham his been the first in with
a new hale. Last yea*1 he marketed
the first hale Aug 17th; in
' 1808, Aug 16th; in 1897, Sep1
7 8d; and in 1896, Aug 3d. In
1 1896 ho had picked over 60,00(1
pounds of seed cotton during the
month of August.

On Tuesday morning last, Mr
Traxler, a drummer, had a thrilling
experience on the public highway

' Kershaw. Ho was driving along,

Mr Traxler supposed that some
one must have heard him the
evening before at the stable order
the team sent to his hotel at 2
o'clock the following morning, as

caster while it was cool, and have
i observed a roll of bills ha exhibit
ed when paying for the turnout.
He thought the man had fallen
asleep on the roadbide awaiting
him and that hie buggy in passing
awoke him. Thus he accounte
for his narrow escape.

The colored Burial Aid Society
' Hall and a cottage on the lot ad*
joining belonging to C D Jones,
Esq, were burned about 4 o'clock
last Wednesday morning. The
Aid Society carried insurance to

j me amount of $200. Mr Jones
bad insurance of $250. on his cottage.
The cottage wai occupied
by Caper* Cautben, col, who recently
sold it to Mr Jones. It
developed after the burning that
Caper* had a policy for $350 on
the building taken out before he
j *old it to Mr Jones and of which
ne said nothing to Mr

*hout. It has further developed
that Cauthen was under the impression
that he could collect thit
policy notwithstanding he had
transferred the property, all ol
whhh causes suspicion to rest on
him. The fire was undoubtedly
of incendiary origin. The hall
where it originated, had not beer
used that night and there was nc
way for it to have caught afire.
When discovered the flames had
burst through the i oof and partiei
first at the scene say there wa?
every evidence of kerosene having
been used.
