A most significant and impress sive deliverance on Senator Ti 11man's course in this campaign appeared yesterday in The South Carolina Baptist, published at ureenwood. It will probably I command mora atcention than anv other criticism of the senator for the reason that it comes from a man ami a journal heretofore distinctly friendly to him. The South Carolina Baptist is for prohibition, and has nominally given its support to Col Hoyt; but it has been so sparing and perfunctory in that support and has expressed such distrust because The State- which it doesn't like?is championing the prohibition candidate, that there has been a general belief that its heart wan not in the cause and thut it was saying just enough to keep itself, as they say.in politics, "regular." We mention these things to show that the article we shall quote, written by the Hev G W Gardner, managing editor of The Baptist, was not inspired by any fanatical eagerness for Col lloyt's success, any liking for The State and the local optionists who ara supporting the prohibition candi date or any militant ardor for prohibition; but wan reluctantly wrung from a friend of Senator Tillman by the senator's own words. Hearken to The South Carolina Baptist and the Rev G \V Gardner of Greenwood: 4'The writer of these lines has never been in opposition to Senator Tillman, nor does he feel now any bitterness toward him. We were out of the State when the issues which landed him into office were raised and did not return until three years ago when . we came back to become managing ^ editor of this paper. So we could not be put down as either for or against him, but we are free to confess that our aympathies were with him in his professed interest in behalf of the class of people in the State who deserved considera non, and we have always given him credit for sincerity. But the speech which he made in this city last Monday was an outrage and we are ashamed that South Carolina has a man to represent her in the highest cotia- ' oil of the nation w ho is en entirely destitute of reverence, ami who has such little respect for the great majority rf the people he represents. His irreverent hand- , ling of the Word of God was { blasphemous, and his reference to the ordinance which commemorates the d'Mith and resurrection of our Cord puts him down as a far worse man than his most ardent enemies have ever branded him. Satan quoted Scripture to our Lord, but wo do not believe that his satanic majesty is capable of handling Gcd's Word more perversely and irreverently than Senator Tillman does. We are a minister, but we have not cared anything for what the senator said about the "unholy alliance." Indeed we have felt that the preacher# havo protested too much against it, so we are not stung bv that ami made to hai shly criticise Mr. Tillman. It pains us, however, to know that people who live in this christian land and who have been taught from in^ fancy to reverence holy things # I would applaud the irreverent hits /if M r Tillman on/I OAAin '? ?' wa I'l I . i iuiiinU| MIIU 'tuc 111 VI/ r* i I joy the low flings which he made at ministers r?f the gospel who, as a class, are the best men we have. Men who are unselfish, and who have given their lives to tho re. ligious and morul well being of their fellow men. Hie advocacy of the liquor traffic and eubtla endorsement of drinking, which any sane man knowe is a ruinous habit, and sneers at thosa who seek to aup press it are unworthy of any man, aad could he expected to emanate only from a man who was lost to all noble purposes and who had ! n> regard for the welfare of the race. It is a pity that the young i men o? our country are permitted 1 to listen to such a man. His reference to the sentiment j which haH kept a dispensary out I of Greenwood and his appeal to; the fancied wrong which ha I been done the people of the county in | so doing was a piece of high hand- i ed demagogistn which our people j will not soon forget. But we must not he severe. I From our heart of hearts we pity this man who, though ho regards his chances for salvation more secure than that of the preachers, is led captive at the will of the devil. .Ye do not believe that | the chiistian manhood of this State will.endorse Senator Tillman iu the course he is pursuing, and > it will not he long until he will j find it out. All that we have said i is without any reference to his right to speak at the campaign] meetings. He may have that j right, but he has no right to out rage the moral and religions sentiment of our people and his high j official position demands that he, should use such speech as he-j cometh a gentleman. Most of our cotton mills are crowded in a limited section of the state and the outlook in thut mill construction in that section will not he; rallied in the future.
