A Pleasant Occasion

last Saturday, and a most delightful

attendance was large and was
representative of the whole eastern
section of the county. Addresses
were made by Kev. Mr. Driggers,

Williams of Lancaster, and Rev.
Mr. Mcintosh of North Carolina.
The talks were very entertaining
and will result in more interest in
Sunday school work in that vicinity.
The dinner was abundant and
not the least enjoyable feature by
any means.

Farmers are about through with
the cultivation of their crops and
are now ready for their Summer
vacation. Crops have improved
some but are far from an average
prospect. The corn crop will he
the lightest for some years. Rain
is needed. The hot sunshine is
telling on crops already and jf
they do not get rain soon, present
prospects of yields will he lowered.

the one at Six Mile church in con?
npction with the Farmers' Institute,
where there was plenty of
table-room and some dinner. The
institute and picnic were well attended,
especially by the county
candidates, who seemed to have
the day, over the institute. However,
a lew farmers guvo the pro fessors
of the institute their at*
tention and were benefited by their
teachings. These institutes are
good things if the fanners would
pay attention to the lectures, and
carry out the plans and suggestions
given out by them.
We noticed all of the county
candidates at this meeting but
missed seeing Indian Land's genial
candidate for the House of Repre

sentatives, Mr. Oscar W Potts.
Mr. Potts is well and favorably
known by the people of his town
ship and does not need to canvass
them for their votes. He is a
worthy, well informed citizen and

her to the legislature, and we hope
to see the voters of the county
consider the Panhandle claim and
give Mr. Potts their votes which
will not only he appreciated by
him but by his many friends. We
also missed seeing our genial Auditor,
John A Cook, who asks to
be re elected. You all know Mr.
Cook who needs no recommendation
from me or any one, as be
has discharged his duty as Auditor
faithfully, fearlessly and satisfac
torily to all.
Cedar Camp, \V O W of Van
Wyck, went to Camp ('reek cemetery
last Wednesday and per
formed the impressive ceremony j
of unveiling the monument erected
to late Sovereign Claude A Beckham,
a member of Cedar Camp.
Soveroign Perry K Wolfe was appointed
Master of ceremonies and
W P Neely, Captain of the procession.
The membership of
Cedar Camp turned out almost to
a man, and wore joined by a few
other choppers, among whom weie '

pressively rendered by the officers
of the Camp Sovereign Mac
Thompson read the poem. "Oh !
why should tho spirit of mortal
man be proud," in a very impressive
manner, which received
the devout attention of all present.
After the exercises at the monument,
all assembled in the church
and heard addresses from Rev. S
H Booth of Yorkville, who is one
of Cedar Camp's charter members,
and Sovereign W S L Porter of
Gum Camp, Lancaster. .J M

speakers, in a few appropriate re.,
marks hearing on Woodcraft.
The Camp was disappointed, in
the absence of its chosen orator
for the occasion, Rev. W CEwart,
who was detained at home on account
cf sickness in his family,
hut the day was pleasantly spent,
and the unveiling a measured success.

spent several days with his friends
around Van Wyek tho past week, j
He was located at Van Wyek two ;
years ago, pastor of Van Wyek '
charge. His friends were glad to |
have him with them, especially
his fellow sovereigns Woodmen of
the world a? he is one of the
charter members of Cedar Camp
and a live, worthy Woodman.
Mrs Nora Miller, widow of the
late .fames Miller formerly of the
Waxhaws but now of Kissemmce, ;
Osceola county, Fla., is on a visit
to .friends in this community, j
She has been away from here i
about twenty years and is struck '
with the many changes that have

Yesterday's papers report the ,
Greenville meeting as the liveliest
of the campaign. Senator Till- ,
man turned himself loose on the
Iiev Dr Gardner as promised.
Col Hoyt made a spirited defenso ,
of the minister. Competent i
judges seem to think that Col
Hoyt will get a two-thirds major**
ity in Greenville county. We
would like to publish the speeches
in this issue hut our space was
filled when the papers containing
them were received.

Both Feet Cut Off.
Mr. M Frank Giles, a young
Highland Park Mill operative,
aged about 18 years, had both his el
feet cut oft yesterday morning by
tho Northbound Tirzah special
train on the S C and G Ex. road.
The accident occurred not far from
the mill when tho young man attempted
to board tho train while ^

it was running, so as to "ome to
town. Ho caught the iron grips
and attempted to spring upon the
steps, hut his feet slipped under
the steps and being caught under h
the wheels, the right foot was t<]
dreadfully mashed about half way U
back, while the wheel struck the ,l
other foot about the ankle and
cut about half the foot off length- ?
