and repeat to any who
may forget:
1. That while nearly all the
preachers of our State advocate
prohibition, not one ol them had
assailed Senator Tillman, publicly
at least, previous to his attack on
them at Bennettsville.
2. That he came voluntarily
into the campaign and in his tirst
speech ait Bennettsville asserted
1 There is an unholy ailliance between
the preachers and barkeepers,
led by Col lloyt."
That he has not denied or
recalled this insulting assertion,
but acknowledging the language,
has attempted to twist the plain
meaning of his words into some- ;
thing no hearer of common sense
would understand of them.
4. That all protests by preach- '
ers. in sharn or soft words norninst

Senator Tillman's speech, have
been occasioned hy their natural
and necessary correction of his
offensive charge against them.
f>. That while now professing
respect for preachers of the gospel,
he continues his misstatements
and misrepresentations, his
efforts to put them in false positions
and his disrespect in speech
and act.
0. That this is not the first time
he has manifested disrespect
towards men specially honored hy
the christian people of our State.

| The financial situation appears
; much brighter today than was inI

then came direct from the hank
officials, but it has since developed
that in their demoralization they
exagerated tho situation. .Judge

tion signed subsequently by the
same directors ami numerous depositors;
asking that tho directors
be allowed to wind up the affairs
without compensation. It is!
(piite clear that tho Sutro Mill has .
been earning a large protit on its j
entire capital, and that it is still i
capable of netting one thousand
dollars a month, oven at present
prices of yarn and cotton. With
a little financiering it is easily pos
sih'o to bring the mill out safe and
it i? possible to stive the bunk. It
is only a question of backbone and

is about to develop,

Charlotte, N C, Aug 2.? Reports
from all parts of the State
indicate that the amendment and
the State ticket have a Democratic
majority of more than forty
thousand.
The election passed off peaceably
everywhere.
In the eastern part of the Stato
thousands of negroes stayed away
from the polls, anil those that did
vote in many cubes cast their ballots
for Aycock.
In one precinct in this county
20 per cent of the negroes voted
for the amendment despite strong
Republican pressure. j
Even the most sanguine Demo
crats are surprised by the landslide
for white supremacy.

Report on Temperance.
The Rock Hill District conference,
in Kossion at Hickory Grove
last week on Friday, adopted the
following report of the committee
on temperance:
The M E Church, South, has
! always taken strong grounds on
j the subject of temperance. Her
[legislation on this subject is sufli
oient and in full harmony with tho
teaching# of God's word. If our
member# respect and observe thi#
legislation, drinking and drunkenness
will be bunished from us, and
our church will bo entirely free
| from any responsibility in the
! liquor trnftic. Therefore, bo it
resolved:
I 1. That wo urgo all members
to observe the legislation of tho
| church as contained in chapter V
of the Discipline, realizing that
the church is tho "light of the
world," and is not to consult.
popular opinion in dealing with
men and measures ; hut the plain
teaching of God's word is to he
her guide.
2 That recognizing that the
liquor traffic in any form is an
j enemy to tho church, home and
[citizenship of the state, we record
our relentless opposition to it.
3. That all right thinking men
recognize that Christian men and
women, and especially Christian
ministers, should oppose this evil
of the ages, wo will consistently
do so in the future as we havo
done in the past. By our record
j wo are willing to stand. We
cannot be driven from it by the
baseless charges of an "unholy
alliance with barkeepers." We
are the true allies of this unconi
promising declaration of God's
word: "Woe unto him that giveth
his neighbor drink, that pattest
thy bottle to him, and makest him
drunken also." Let all men
know this has evor been, and always
