The Lancaster and Rock Hill
colored base ball teams played a
match' game here on the evening
of the 4th. The score stood Lancaster
14; Rock Hill, 4. A pretty
bad beat.
Mrs Ada Hough and daughter,
Miss Bon Hough, of this place,
attended the burial of the former's
sister -in-law, Mrs Melissa Clifton,
at Fort Lawn last Wednesday
morning.
At the home of her daughter,
Mrs Forbes, at this place, on
Tuesday last, Mrs A G Smith of

nebs. She was about 60 years of
age. Her remain* were taken to
Blacksburg for interment.
Our townsman, Mr. Oliver
Hlackmon, probably has the finest
cow in the county. She is Devon*
Jersey, and gives over 6J gallons
of milk |>er day. Mr. B.,

of butter from one milking.
It has been exceedingly warm
the past few days, the maximum
temperature being about 90 degrees.
This month and next, it
is said, will he the hottest weather
in years, due to the appearanco
of a new sun spot.

has taken high rank in
the South for excellence and high

Reception to The Teachers.

very pleasant reception at their

teachers in attendance on the
county Institute, their instructors
and a few other friends. Fully

joyed the evening to the fullest.

To Attend the National Teachers'
Association

National Educational Association
which meets in Charleston next
week. The three former will
leave today and the three latter
will loave Monday for Charleston.
Prof Baker will go from Charleston
to Greenwood to open the
Summer Teachers' Institute for
that county week after next.

Sufferers In India
An entertainment for the benefit
of the sufferers from the famine
in India will he given in the court
house next Friday night under
the auspices of the ladies of
the town. It will Iks in the nattiro
of a circulating library, a certain
miiiincr or oooks oeing represented
by persons in costume.
Prizes will be given to the two
persons guessing correctly the
greatest number of books. Lemonade
will be served free of
charge. An admission of 10
cents will be charged at the door
and those desiring to competo for
the prizes will pay 10 cents additional.
An svening of pleasure is
assured. The cause is a worthy
one. Let everybody be present.

The Neproes Celebrate the (?Iorioum
Fourth.
Several hundred negroes celebrated
the 4th of July here. Most
of them came in on Massey's excursion
and were from Chester,
Richburg, Fort Lawn and other
stations along the L & C It R. The
excursionists headed by a brass
band proceeded from the depot to
Massey's Monumental Park, whe re
all kinds of entertainment?nub
lie speaking, match game of ball,
dancing, etc., ? had been provided
for their amusement, The Lan
caster negroes entertained their
guests iu good style, and they
seemed to enjoy the day. The
crowd was sober and well behaved
and not a single arrest was made
during the day. It remained for
an act of gross carelessness as the
excursionists1 train was moving
out about 11 o'clock that night,
to wind up the day with perhaps
a fatal shooting. Sam Ilorton,
col., was shot in the side and it is
thought he will die. It is not
known who shot him hut the
shooting is thought to have been
accidental. As the train moved
off a number of the "young Alexs1'
on board tired their pistols and
Ilorton happened to lie in range
of one of the balls. The dispen
sary was kept closed all day which
no doubt contributed to the good
l>ehavior of the large crowd. Had
whiskey been accessible to the
crowd, riotous conduct and blood
shed no doubt would have mude
the day a memorable one. As it
was the colored people had a delightfully
nice time and their
orderly conduct refloted credit
