Reasons in a Letter to The
State Chairman. <
The State.
If the entry of Mr A C Jones 1
into the senutorinl race against '1
Senator Tillman created surprise,
the announcement that he has
changed his mind and withdrawn
from the race will doubtless create
even more surprise. This ho has
done, however, and Senator Tillman
succeeds himself in the upper
house of congress without opposition.
Yesterday State Chairman
Wilie .Jones received a letter from
Mr Jones asking that his pledge I
he withdrawn and stating the rea- (
sons for this action. Mr Jones
set forth that his business would
not permit him to make the canvass
as thoroughly as he desired
and that he did not see the nece*?
sity for finishing the race. Co|
Jones, not having the permission
of the writer, did not make the
letter public.
Col Jones immediately upon re
coipt of the letter wired Mr Jones
saying that the pledge would be
withdrawn, and telling Mr Jones
to draw on him as chairman of
the State executive committee for
the amount nf tk?
vuv ?D?Duninriiij
which will b? returned.
This leares Senator Tillman
without possible opposition and
means that he succeeds himself in

This is the first change in the
political outlook in this State
since the campaign oponed.
There has never since the time
for closing tho entries came been
the slightest doubt that Senator
Tillman would succeed himself,
overwhelmingly defeating Mr
Jones, but the latter's action yesterday
makes plainer sailing for
tho senior senator and removes tho
necessity for any kind of a contest
at tho polls.

Washington, June 23?The
Navy Department thin morning
received a dispatch from Admiral
KempfT stating that an engagement
is now in progress between the
United States marines and other
forces against the Chinese army
outside Tien Tsin.
The following bulletin has been
been issued by the War Department:
"Acting Secretary Hackett
has this inoining received a dispatch
from Admiral Kempff, tinted
Chofoo, Juno 23, to the effect that
the murines under Major Walter,
together with 400 Russians, have
had an engagment with the
Chinese army neur Tien Tsin.
They could not break through the
line. A force numbering 2,000,
Admiral Kempff reports, is now
ready to make another attempt."
The main importance of this
dispatch is Kempff's disclosure
that it is the Chinese army and
not the Boxers who are fighting
the foreign troops.
The secretary of State on Friday
issued a commission to t.he
Darlington Oil and Ice Manufacturing
company of Darlington,
which is to have f 30,000 capital
stock.
The toUl land army of China
on peace footing is put at 300,
500 men, and on war footing at
ibout 1,000,000.

Special to The State.
Laurens, Juno 23.?A conservative
cstmiato places the present
wheat crop in this county, acreage
ami yield at 30 per cent increase.
Every farmer planted wheat, from
; one-half acre lots to sixty acre
tields. There are a number of
farmers in the county who have
made from 200 to P>00 bushels,
which means 40 to 00 barrels of
flour. The crop was harvested in
very good condition, but has been
damaged to Homo extent by the
rains. Whero the shocks were
carefully capped the damage has
been slight. Several reapers
were bought and used successfully

A one-acre yield contest participated

township was won by Mr T B

odd bushels. The lowest yield
was 19. The conditions of the
contest were that to the one winning
the other nine would give a
bushel each.
