The Shanghai correspondent of The Daily Kxpresssays: 4'Sheng, as head of the telegraph admimst rat ion, pretended that the line connecting Shanghai with Pekin had been down since .Juno Oth, and that the wires to Tien Tsin were cut on .Juno 15th. Tho South Carolina Baptist contains n statement in regard to Col Hoyt's position on the liquor question, which, to say tho least, is misleading and incorrect. Tho South Carolina Baptist intimates that Col Hoyt once favored high license. The fact is that at tho time to which Tho Baptist refers, in 1 KS(), Col Hoyt, or rather, tho Baptist Courier of which ho was senior editor, advocated high license as opposed to low license, which was entirely consistent with his stand before and after that perio I of his life. Prohibition was not then an issue. Whenover prohibition has been an issue, Col Hojt has always fought for prohibition and the editor of tho South Carolina Baptist ought to know that fact. When it has boon impossible to secure prohibition, Col Hoyt, has been willing to take the next best thing. That is a practical stand for any man to take. When local option was recognized by law, Col Hoyt favored securing prohibition by counties but at the same time fought for State prohibition, as lie is doing today.
