VAN WYCK ITEMS.
On last Sunday afternoon Van
\\ vck and the greater part of
Waxhaw ami Indian Land Townwhip
were visited by heavy rains.
Small streams overflowed their
banks and washed up the crops
along them, many say it vas the
worst washing rain for years.
The damage to land and crops is
considerable and it will require a
lot of labor and attention to repair
the damages.
The small grain crop is being
harvested and is considered very
good ? much above our averago
O ~
grain crops.
Cherries are ripe and the crop
is abundant. House-keepers aro
busy now putting up this favorite
fruit.
Mr Ilenry Dixon of Columbia
and Mr .1 1* Hunter of Lancaster,
paid our village and community a
visit last Sunday. Mr Dixon it a
relative of Mr. .1 L Tillman, whom
lie had not seen for some years,
and at lirst meeting he failed to
recognize him and took him to he
a traveling politician which was
not far from the mark ? as Mr.
Dixon is going to visit this part
of the state again 11 the interest of
''our uext president ? Mr Bryan.''
Mr. Hunter, by the way is a
candidate for sheriff, hut he was
not looking after his interests in

this matter. Mr. Hunter has
some very strong friends hero
who need no watchimr. unless it
is by the other fellows.
Mr. Morrison, traveling sales
man for E M Andrews Music .
House of Charlotte, spent Wednesday
night in Van Wyck. Ilo
was placing some music here with
Mr. J It Williamson, ou?* popular
and live section master.
A good many of our colored
citizens took in the Dick Massey >

Dr. Verner Nisbet, of the Uni
verity of Pennsylvania, is at
homo spending his vacation with
his mother. The Doctor is preparing
himself well for hia chosen
profession -i? talented and we
predict a bright future for hitn.
Misses Birdie Stephenson and
Evelyne Nisbet are visiting the
latter's grand mother, Mrs. ,J N

Mr. and Mrs J A Hyatt attended
Winthrop commencement and
the marriaire of Miss

Miss Blanche Smith of Waxhaw
has been with her aunt, Mrs.
M M Tillman this week. Miss
Blanche is gathering and canning

Closing Exercises of The Oakhurst
High School.

wind, so to speak, but to suy a
few sincere words in regard to

this enjoyable occasion?the closing
exercises of the Oak hurst
I High School, June 4.
School having closed Friday,
Juno 1, and as the pupils wore
kept busy standing the final ex
animations, the entertainment was
put off until Monday night June
4.
The exorcises were carried .out
almost perfectly by the children.
They as well as tho teachers deserve
great praise for their being
so well prepared, To have been
present at the entertainment was
to get an idea of the thorough- j
noss of the school work. The
public exercises show that there
has been great efforts put forth by
' both teachers and pupils. A
great ileal of time and labor spent.
The school building was tastefully
decorated. It was ouite a
treat to see so great a number of
bright faced boy# and girls to7

get her.

teachers. With Prof W C Bynum
as Principal and Miss Emma
Mcllwain as assistant, wo can "account
for its being one of the
most successful terms on her
school record. Prof Bynum is a
very enthusiastic young tea.-her,
thorough in his work, kind and
gentlemanly in his dealings with
ins pupils. He will no doubt
meet with great success in his
well chosen profession
We feel that Miss Mcllwain
needs no public compliments as
she is known all over the county |
as a thorough and painstaking
teacher. Her work is always
commendable.

are well up with their work and

Wheat harvest has commenced and

farmers are beginning to realize
their mistake too.
The health of our community is
not very pood. Several families
