the widow, daughter and
leseei11lents of the general, hundreds
of his comrades in arms,
the oflieers and committee of tho
G. A K. and many persons distinguished
in military, political
and s cial circles. The statue represents
the contributions of thousands
of his comrades, none of
whom was allowed to subscribe
more than 15 cent-, and is the result
of a movement started shortly
after (Jen. Grant's death at
Mount M< Gregor in duly, 18*5.

were profoundly impressive. They

Carolina, Mr. Gardner of Michigan,
