Mr. T hos K Johnson, who has

His remains were taken to Winnsboro

States were members of the
Masonic fraternity ? Washington,
Jackson, Polk, Buchanan, .Johnson,
Garfield and McKiniey.
Washington was master of his
lodge at Alexandria, Va. Jackson
was at one time grand master
of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee,
and Buchanan was deputy grand
master of the Grand Lodge of
Pennsylvania.
President McKiniey has been
kinder to the South than ony pre
vious Republican tenant of the
white house, but he appears to

Mr. Editor:?Optimus has had
some mercy on your readers for
some time, and has not bored them
with V an Wyck Items, but if you
will permit me to intrude your
columns, I will give some items
of news and other things und will
be as lenient and optimistic us
possible.
The good rains and tine seasons
have put a move on growing crops
and also on tho farmer. The stands
of cotton are poor, but it is still

The fruit crop is promising and
if nothing happens to it, it will be
the best for years. Some time
since "Old Hickory" in Van

the deficiency will go wanting and
the announcing columns will bo a

have been nipped in the bud.

Sandy Kidge church, over in
North Carolina, last Sunday. They
returned' woll pleased with the
trip and their pood treatmet
among strangers. The latter of
this trio is a bachelor and on his
return said the church was tilled
with pretty girls, hut did not tell
us what was the preacher's text.
His attention was otherwise engaged
and stronger itupiessions
made than the text. Wo will
hear of some more trips to Sandy
Ridge and the little .Judge may
fall in with the other bachelor as
he likes to go where there arc
protty girls.
On last Saturday evening, we
were looking f??r the preacher to
drive up, and in the twilight wo
thought we espied him. We put
on our sanctified look ready for
mooting hiin and his good lady,
when tne buggy stopped in front
of our place of business, but to
our surprise we had to change to
a dignified ftir and speuk to Judge
Chas .tones of Lancaster and his
fair companion. This surprise
almost caused us to lose our dignity,
i lit it was aoon regained in the
presence of the genial Judge and

Brown have been visiting in the
Waxkaw. They spent one day
with J L Tillman and family. We
are glad that Dr. Brown is going 1
to locate near us for the practice
of his profession. He will havo i

Miss Lena Heath of Charlotte
visited Dr. Nishet's family last
week.
Mrs. .1 R Williamson and little
Ruby Houston are visiting relatives
at Ailuntu and Villa Rica,

of West Lancaster, visited his
father and family Saturday and

Mr. Jos K Connors' school will
close next Friday. It was the intention
of the school and neigh
borhood to have a basket picnic
on Friday, but as farmers are so
busy the plan has been abandoned
and the school will close with no
public exercises.
Tho Woodmen of Cedar camp
will have an important meeting,
Saturday, at 4 o'clock at their
hall. A full attendance o* the
camp is desired.
On the fourth Sunday afternoon
of May at 3:40 o'clock Rev. J I
Sprinks will preach a sermon for
Cedar camp. Woodmen of the
World, at Van Wyck church. All
the members of the camp and
their families should come out to
hear this sermon. Everybody is
cordially invited and Cedar camp
extends a cordial invitation to all
Woodmen of other camps to bo

PENSIONS NOW TO BE PA ID.
Amounts That Each Will (Jet
This Year. The Number.
The State board of pensions has
at last authorized the clerk to pre \
pare and sand out forthwith the
warrants for the pensioners of the
State, and the work is now being
rushed. The checks are to he
sent to the several clerks of court.
Charleston has not yet sent back
her revised list, and Florence and
Chesterfield were late in getting
in ; hence these counties cannot
bo reached until next week.
The total appropriation is $100,000
; from this the tew back pensions
and the expenses of the
county boards have to be paid.
The number of pensioners this
years is larger than ever? 7,2">1
in Class C ; 862[]in Class B and
48 in Clas-? A. Each . of these
will receive the following
amounts: Class C $12.80 ; Class
B $16 40, and Class A $72. As
the number increases so tho
amount each pensioner gets de^
creases. A good proportion of

lieutenant governor was tainted
by collusion and fraud.
