Sam Johnson Horned to Death
Near Anderson. Was it Suicide
or Result of a

news of one of the most remarkable
canes of what is supposed to
ha,re been suicide reached this
place from Townville last night.
A negro, Sam Jackson, wna the
victim. The scant clothing having
been saturated with kerosene
oil and then ignited, the poor
negro, enveloped in flames that
licked savagely as they ate their
way into the flesh, with shrieks
that told of his horrible agonies,
ran from his little cabin, untd

hausted by the roadside and soon
expired.
From information it is learned
that there had been some friction
in Sam's connubial life; that on
the day of the deed his father-in>
, law had taken Sam's wife from
him. This, it is supposed, is the
cause of the negro resorting to
the determination of his life. i
Further developments may i
show that this dusky spouse returned
to the sceno of tho un- I
pleasantness and decided upon \
this method of dispatching her \
disagreoable contemporary, which ?
would seem more credible and
probable than the suicidal theory.
Johnson is said to have been a (

about one and a half miles from
Townvillo.

Carolina Suspects.

The State, 28th inst
Detective F M Barrow, of the
Norfolk (Va.) police force, writes
the following to the governor:
"1 have under arrest two negro
men who gave me the following
names, W II Green ami \V S
Carter, who were very anxious,
when a gentleman informed thera
that he was from South Carolina.
Theee men were arrested, and it
is evident that they have committed
some serious crime. Knowing
these parties will not tell the
county they are from and owing
to so many counties in your State,
1 take the liberty of writing to
you for the desired information.

Green, ago 27; height 5 fret?! or
7 inches; complexion copper color;
weight 155 to lt>5; scar over left
eye, running upward on upper
lip, and part of upper front tooth !

Gov McSweeney of course
knows nothing of the matter, and
the letter is published in the hope
that if these men are wanted,

hundred in an attack against the

Harris confessed. The mob
promptly hanged him and riddled

9,575 Persons Have Lost Their
Lives in Thirty Years.

The annual report of .lames KoiL
eriek, chief of the State bureau
of mines and mining, contains a
chapter dealing with mine accis
dents and their cause. In the .'50
years from 1870 to 1889 the report
states 9,575 lives were lost
in and about the anthracite coal
mines of Pennsylvania.
I tie report shows that in the
tir-t decade (1870 79) for every
1,000 persons employed a per
centage of 3,830 persons lost their
lives; in the second decado
(1880-89) for every 1000 persons
3,210 persons lost their lives ;
while in the third decade (189099)
for every 1000 persons employed
3,140 lost their lives.
The total number of lives lost, including
1870-79, was 2,151 ;

loss of life was 4,305.
Gov McSweeney is entirely
right in promising to dismiss
every magistrate who refuses to
enforce the vaccination law. A
