Can it be Made to Pay.
While we do not like to lower
he argument in favor of prohibition,
which rests upon an impregnable
basis, there are so
nany persons who are deceived
>y the appearance ot things that
t is well to remind them that
prohibitory liquor laws can bo
mule to yield a revenue to the
public treasury, and that this
phase of the dispensary system
Upcs not stand alone in the cognation
of the liquor traffic. An
'steemcd friend writes us that be
las found in the \V C T U department
of a Maine newspaper
he statement that in one county
n Maine, which contains less than
>ne-tenth ot the total population
>f the state, more than $20,000,
n fine* was collected in one year
or (ho violations of the prohibitory
liquor law. Is not this an
.rgument ad honiinem for prohi ition
as against the dispensary!
f "prohibition docs not prolibit,"
what will mercenary souls
ay about the revenue? This
ommercial argument is not to
ur liking, but the facts are
seful with which to moot the
laim in this state that the disiensary
is conferring such great
lonefits in a financi il way.
Venty thousand dollars in a sinle

It was thought this morning

the citizens agreed that lynching

The order for the departure of

The governor protested against

The Whites had lynched the
