Tlii.-4 Convict Remained in the
liiver Three Hours and Floated
Three Miles.
The State, 27th inst.
Middleton (irilliin, the 15 vear
term convict who managed to
make his escape last week when
the gang of convicts made their
desperate assault upon Guard
Hailing, resulting in the killing
of one, the wounding of another
and the escape of griffin alone,
lias been captured. The story of
the capture reads almost like
lietion, and it was not Griffin's
determination to get awav that
was lacking. Ho will doubtless
arrive at the prison today, if he
does not cut his way out of the
Newberry jail.
The capture of the desperate
convict was effected by M?* James
Templeton of ChappeiPe on the
Columbia and Greenville road.
Ho hoR"d of the convict yesterday
morning and went on his trail.
Ho ran the fellow into the river
which was swollen until it was cut

side, but the river was so high
and the current was so strong that
ho could not mako it. Then he
began to drift down the river,
floating. Seeing his game Mr.
Templeton followed as b6st ho
could along the bank. The fellow
floated down a distance of three
miles, and then his strength liegnn
to fail him and he made for the
shore, l.anding ho began running
i through the bushes. Though he

was practically exhausted he ran
well and might hare finally gotten
away had it not been for a barbed
, wire fence. The fellow ran full
tilt into this and become entangled.
He was too weak to go further
before mi*. Tenipleton oame upon
him and with drawn pist'd com
pelled his suncnder. In his en?
coun'er with the barbed wire
fence the negro cut o|)en his upper
lip and was otherwise hurt.
The fellow, who is a small black
man. but wirv and vicious, was
brought to Chappell's where his
arms were securely hound behind
him >ir. Tompleton then placed
him on the train and took him to
Newberry where he turned him
over to Sheriff Btiford to be
brought buck to the penitentiary.
The negro bikes his recapture
philosophically, believing that he
did his best to get away.

All the parties in interest met
in the board room of tho Carnegie
Steel company for six hours to- i
day and as a result not only have
all matters of difference hern settled
and adjusted, hut the separate
and distinct amounts which each
party is to receive from tne great
combined capital has boon agreed
upon. The charter of the Carnegie
compnnv haw been signed by all
. the parties in interest, some 3d in
all, and the three first names in
the certificate are Andrew Carne,
gie, followed by Henry Phipps,
Jr., and Henry Clay Frick, thus
indicating to the world that the
old friends and recent litigants are
again united and standing together
at the head of the combined
industries with its capital of one
hundred and sixty million dollars
and its securities amounting to
twice as much. This, therefore,
ia the geatest corporation that the
I United States has erer known if
not the world, in that it starts out
with If 160,000,000 of stock subscribed
for in view of the iguature
of 36 men who are fully able
to respond to their subscriptions
! for this vast amount.

monument will lie erected on
suitable elevations just to the
rear of the Confederate Soldiers
Monument, will he about 10 feet
in height, and surmounted by a
figure of an Indian with drawn
how and arrow.
On one side of the die will he
represented in relief, a buffalo in
his wild independence; on the ob?
verso side a representation of j
primitive life in the forests ; and
on the other two sides inscriptions
commemorative of the Catawhas'
heroism und good fuith.
