HORRIBLE CRIME OF
"PREACHER" JONES.
With Axe urn! Torch He Commits
Five Murders.
Raleigh, N C., March 22?The
most horrible crime in the history
of North Carolina was perpetrated
early this morning at Garners,
tivo miles east of this city, when
a negro, 'lorn Jones, commonly
known in the county as "Preachpp'

and her oldest daughter, Ida Jones,
and then sot tire to the beds in
which lay the bodies of the murdered
victims and four others, all
children, ranging in years from a
baby one month old to the lamest
boy who was not more than rive
years of age. The work was done
with an axe, the murderer, according
to the story of little sevenyear-old
Laura Jnues, who escaped
with her younger sister,
deliberately and coolly striking
the mother four times and then
making two heavy strokes into
the body of tli? oldest child
The house was completely do
stroycd by tire and the bodies of
the four youngest children were
so frail that ihev are now distributed
among the ashes, which
alone remain to tell the story of
the conflagration. The body of
hlla .lones and that of Ida, the
13 year old child, were horned
beyond recognition, and are lying
on the ground charred crisp and
with the whole bodies cut open
and displayed to view.
When those who heard the
story of the murder from the lips
of the little ragged negro went
to Jones' house to arrest him
they found that his clothes bore
the stains of fresh blood and his
hands oven showed spots of human
blood
Boers Claim a Victory.
London, March 12.?It is reported
from Koonstudt that the
Boers have defeated the British
troops under (Jen (iatacre hut it
is not believed here A

to a news agency from Springfontein
Tuesday says (iatacre's was
all well. The last advices also
placed Gatacre thirty miles north
of Bethulin, where the Boers report
that gteut loss was indicted
on him.
The reports of skirmishing at
Lohatsi, however, cause much
anxiety. While apparently no
serious loss has heen suffered, the
ability of Bhimnter's force to
reach Mafeking is doubted. Further
news is awaited. As six
days have elapsed since the last
definite news, a hig engagement
may have occurred.
