Yesterday morning, news of
one of the foulest crimes that has r
ever been committed in Chesterfield
county reached this office and
was brought by a gentleman from >
the scene of the crime. j
On last Monday night, Cassie j
Boan, a white woman of very ;
qestionable character was cut and
burned to death in the woods,
about fire miles south-east of
Jefferson. The woman wrr cut

poor woman wastset on tire and
all clothing was horned from her
body.
This crime is shocking in every ,
detail. A helpless woman cot and !,
burned to death in the dead hours i
of the night in the woods, nearly i
a tn'le from any one's house. Her \
screams for mercy sounding on <
the night air only led to the die- <
covery of the deed. The onfor- ]
tunate woman lingered until noon j
on Tuesday when death came. {
The coroner is now holding an in- <

Ah murder most foul ! K \
j blacker crime cannot ha conceived. 1
j The very thought of it sickens a .

Such a crime will not and must
not go unpunished. 1
Our civilization demands that ^

The law of South Carolina must

FOUR CHILDREN BITTEN BY ,
MAD DOG IN SUMTER.
The Father in Attempting to Rescue
Them, Also Bitten. Sumter
People Raise a Fund to Send
Them Off.
Special to The State.
Sumter, March, 18 ? Mr Samuel
E Shaw who liven near St Charles
n this county, while attempting
to rescue hi* four children who j
were all hitten by a mad dog last j
Tuesday morning, was himself
badly bitfen before the brute
could be dispatched. Just how
it occurred is not known, but the
fact that he and his four children
were bitten caused widespread
sympathy and excitement. The
people of Sumter became interest
ted and the matter ever since has
been the chief aubjeet of conversation
on the streets and in the '
homes. While others were talk
ing Mr. W B Boyle, a citizen of j
Sumter, was expressing his
smvpathy in a more tangible way.
He knew that Mr. Shaw could
not boar th? expense of a trip to
Pasteur Institute in New York
and laying aside his business
started a subscription list to send
hi n and hischildren to New York.
The people needed no )>ersnasion
and within two days more thaD
$400 was cheerfully given. Saturday
night Mr. Shaw and his
children left for Now York to
enter the Pasteur Institute where
everything will be done to arrest
the malady.
This act skaeds well for Sumter
county and is keenly appreciated j
not only by Mr. Shaw but hy his
numerous friends and relatives.
