explained the manner in which
these warehouses were managed.

In Lauren* they have a wiltehouso
which is paying the stockholders
a good dividend. During the fall

ed the money, paid his debts ami
a few days ago he sold his cotton
and made $8 00 to $10.00 a bale
by holding it. Dr. Steppe is
chairman ol a committee to get up
the stock for a warehouse to be
located in Spartanburg. The capi*
tal is to be $20,000 in $25.00
shares. That gives the small

Owens, postmaster at this place,
was arrested this afternoon under
a warrant issued by United States
Commissioner .F W Johnson on a
I charge of embezzling the funds
of the postollioe. The warrant
was issued at the instance of Post
J of lice Inspector Mover, who for
j several days lias beon investigate
ling the condition of the offieo and
I has discovered a dcticioncy in the
post muster's accounts amounting
to orer $1,000. At a conference
I of Mr. Owens' bondsmen, who

are highly reputable and responsi.

a capable and reliable young gen
tleman, was swlected to till the
posit ion of post master temporarily
and has entered upon thedischargc
ot his duties.
Mr Lido has had experience in
the ottice, and his management

months ago by President Mc*
Kinley, to succeed C'upt Douglas
Mclntyre, wh >se term had expired

took charge of the dispensary today
and announced the following

John Black, shipping clerk.
These air old employes, except
Mr Dixon, who become* superintendent.
He tilled the same position
once before, but resigned
about a year ago. He succeeds
Mr Bryant of Pickens. Mr Ycldell's
name is not among the
bookkeepers, Hut his place has not
been tiledl pending an investigation
whether his relationship to
Mr L J Williams will debar him.
The Mill Stone Burst and Killed
Jim Best.

Allendale, Fob 27 ?Mr. Wylio
Black put up a corn mill a few
weeks ago, in connection with his
large ginnery Last Saturday,
while the mill was in operation,
Jim Best, colored, was standing
on the ground, near the hopper,
when the Inure mill-rock, whi h
had been used for many years,
suddenly broke into two parts.
One part struck Best on the thigh
and shattered it completely. He
died Sunday morning from the
ejects of his injuries.

enormous quantities of cotton,
