McLAURIN HAS DECLINED.
Urged by the President to go to
the Philippines hut Preferred to
Stay Here.
The News and Courier
Washington, Feb 15?Senator
McLaurin was todav invited by
the president to sei ve us a member
of the new Philippine com"
mission. The junior senator from
South Carolina received a message
from the president stating that he
desired to# confer with him on a
personal matter. The hour for
the conference was appointed for
this morning. Senator McLaurin
went to the white house and had a
long consultation with tho presi
I dent relative to the membership
i on the commission. The whole
j subject was fully discussed, the
, scope of the commission and the
duties expected to be performed
by tho member# of the comtnis
6ion. Senator McLaurin expressed
his gratitude at thus beine honoied
hy the president, but said ho could
not see his way clear to make
such a personal sacrifice which
would separate him from his
' family. The president asked him
to consider the matter fully before
declining the invitation and
said that it was his intention to
appoint a representative southern
democrat on the commission.
Senator McLaurin replied that he
had no desire to retire from the |
I
senate, where his surroundings
are very agreeable, and he feels
that he can render more efficient
service to the cause of cummer
cial expansion by remaining in
the senate than by going to the
Philippines as a member of the
comtn ission.

Baptists Excluded a Dispenser.
Athens Or, Banner.
Mr Macon C Johnson, manager
of tho Athens dispensary, is no
longer a mam her of the First
Baptist church of Athens.
This church took action upon
his case Sunday morning and on
his refusal to give up tne position
he holds at the dispensary, the
church hy a vote of three t.? one
excluded him from membership.
The objection raised to Mr
Johnson was .not personal, nor
did it pertain to his private or re
ligions character. It was based
upon the fact that he sold liquors
at the dispensary. lie had strong
defenders in the church, they (
maintaining that the dispensary
was established in part by the
votes and influence of the members
of the Baptist church, that it
j was deemed to be the nest solu- j
tion of the whiskey that could he
obtained in Athens, and tha* Mr
Johnson had accepted the position
of the manager of the dispensary
only after coasultation with tho
leading memt>ers of the church as
to his religious duty.
