that Roberts had succeeded in
pushing Gen French's force for-j

day. The date of Robert's dispatch
shows that he has captured
the Boer's stronghold at Jacobs*
dal also.
Robert's movement is one of
the military wonders of the world.
He only started on the road to
Kimberley last Saturday.
Roberts is being praised to the
skies, Kitchener and French are
not forgetten as it is believed the
former organized the forces.
French's cavalry leaders made a
most brilliant dash.
The news of the relief comes
like a ray of sunshine out of a

overtook Cronje's rear guard
this morning. A battle is now
imminent. Cronje had to stop to
protect his transportation. Kitchener
directs Kelly Kenny's operations.

Boers at Magersfontein are now
completely hemmed in by Methuen's
forces at Modder river

Macdonald's Highland at Koodoosberg.
London, Feb 17.?A Jacobsdal
dispatch dated yesterday says af
ter Ine Sixth division evacuated
.laconsdal Thursday in order to
move north the enemy reoccopied
the place. The Fifteenth
brigade, including the London
Imperial Volunteers, attacked
and shelled the Boers. The
men advancd steadily in splendid
order and drove the enemy over
the ridires north ward. The volunteers
who had scouted to right and
left showed veteran-like pluck
and steadiness. The Staffordshires
made a bayonet charge but
the enemy didn't wait. The town
was recaptured in three hours.
The mounted infantry is pursuing
the Boers.
London, Feb 17.?A dispatch
from Jacobsdal dated last niirht
says Cronjo with nine thousand
men, all the forces surrounding
Kimberly, is in full retreat with
Kelly Kenny pursuing.
Cronje's forces are traveling
light and have n< en compelled to
abandon their provision an<l am
munition trains which aro tteing
picked up by British cavalry.
The forces of Kelly-Kenny are

large quantity of stores all belonging
to Cronje's laager, which
wus still being shelled by our artillery
when Kitchener dispatched
his messenger.
French's troops were onthusias
tically received at Kimberley.
The officer* were dined at the club
at night.
Both column* are bow march
ing north probably to effect a
junction. The enemy are retiring
north. The ninth division under
Gen Colesville 's in rear of the
sixth division The enemy so far
has made no determined stand.
Thousands of head of stock have
been captured.
Modder River, Feb 16.? Gen
Cronje with a large force has retreated
from the head laager on
Modder river towards Bloemfontein.
Kelly-Kenny is now at
tacking him.

dispatch received here today from
Boer sources states that the British
under Buller are attacking
Vaal Kranz. The telegram says
the Boers are holding their own.
