Lancaster, Fobv. 2. 1900.
It is significant that all State
laws against trusts hare heen I
thrown out ?kicked out hv the
courts, when brought tf> ^ |e<:al
issue.
As I'he News has alwa\t> contended,
the onlv wav to tiirht and
destroy the trusts is to fall hack
on the good old democratic doc
trine of tariff sufficient to support
the Government.
Protective tariff is rohhery and
leads up to the combinations
irhich oppress the people.
AM com hi ties or trusts are simply
unions of capital to force up
prices on the necessities which are
. i
required by the people.
So long as foreign competition
is -hut out the trusts can name
their own prices Remove the
protective tariff ami prices will
tumble.
All newspapers chii unite in a
tight to remove the tariff on wood
pulp. Senator 1'latt, of Now
York, is reaping a fortune today,
hut. if the newspapers unite this
trust can he smashed.
Rxperience has proved that
State laws will not accomplish
anything Drop Id to 1 and the
1'oilv of Bryan a"d take up good,
healthy democratic doctrine and
make the tight against trusts and
we will win ?Greenville News.
The idea of having preachers on
juries seems to work very well,
lie v J \1 Turner, one of the
preachers recently drawn in
<xreenville county, sat on a mur-|
dor case la^t week. The jury
stood eleven for acquittal and the
preacher mule a mistrial by hold
in<_r out for manslaughter. Of
co':' -<? there are cases where a
nv n-laver should l?o allowed to go
unpunished; but in our opinion
so -h cases do not occur oftener
than once in 10,000. The chances
are that. Ker Mr Turner wa*
right, even if he did cause a mis
t in!. ?Yorkville Enquirer.
