Government Men Find Hint After

rado. lie found protitahle employment,

whom ho fell in love in the center
of the state, married Iter. There
was not a nturnier of funily infelicity,
and they were pointed to
hy their neighbors as an unusually
happy couple.
One morning, after several i
years of married life, the husband
kissed his wife ?jood bye and left j
home, ostensivelv for a near-by

earth had swallowed him.
The opinion was accepted, after
r time, that Williamson had horn
muidcred and rohhod by a gang
of outlaws then operating in that
section. Within a few works
after the disappearance of the
man, a hod> was found in a gulch
beside the road over which Will
iamson was supposed to have
traveled, the remains, in u general
wnv, answered the description of
the missing man, the clothing being
of the same pattern. Though
the features were too badly decomposed
to make identification
positive, the remain* were given
burial, and a grief-stricken woman
followed the coflin to the
grave A monument was erected
nearing Williamson's name and
inscription.
In time the widow doffed her
weeds. Presently alio married
again, and started on her second
matrimonial venture under plea*
ing uM-piees The war came on,
and the sound itushund joined the
I'nion army. He served with
honor, and died on the tiring line.
'l ears after the declaration of
peace, the woman, being in reduced
circunutanccs, made application
for pension upon the
strength of her second husband's
service. The usual papers wore
prepared, showing iho circumstance*
as to the first marriage
iinl Williamson's supposed death,
and :dlidavits from the heat people
? f the little village.
In passing through the pension
bureau the tirst olliriuls approved
ilit* application, t?ui when it reach*
imI tli? Inst auditor tlicio was a
hitch. lie - was impressed with
the story of the wuinan and the
disappearance of her husband. lie
did not r'gard the former's story
false, hut remembering the man*
nor in which many cases of like
character had terminated, ordered
a close investigation.
One of the best pension agents
was sent to Colorado to look up
the case.
Williamson's relatives were
located and traces of the tuan
were found in Minnesota, where
he had spent six years, finally
leaving for this state. The clews
were followed up, one after another,
and the pension agents
have now finally located their
man in the respected head of a
large family in good circumstance.
The officer confronted Williamson
with the charge of desertion
and bigamy, hut ho was loud in
his denunciations of the accusation
as false. lie persisted in
them until theofficer made thrcAts
to bring the Colorado wife to
Tennessee, when he wilted and
confessed the entire story.
The papers in the case were
forwarded from the Nashville pen\

bion office to Washington today.
The pension will he refused upon
the ground tnnt the applicant was
not the legal wife of her second
hushand. The discovery has
caused a sensation in the Tonnes
see community in which Williamson
has resided for fifteen years,
and his second wif'? is now prooaring
to bring a suit for divorce.
No explaii.ition is given as to
why he abandoned his Colorado
wife and home, hut the story goes
to show the persistency and
shrewdness of the pension otiice
sleuths. Tho ease is hut one of
many pension frauds unearthed
in Nashville within tho past few
months, though the pension applicant
in this case was a sincere
and injured woman.

The trial of .luliu Morrison James
for ihc murder of Frank Leidenheimer
of the "Mr. Plaster of
Paris company,'' of which they
were leading man and lady on the
stage of the ('hattanoogu opera
house on the night of Srpt 28 last,
ended at I o'clock this afternoon,
when the jury returned a verdict
of not guilty.
Miss Morrison, upon hearing
the words which insured her freedom,
advanced to the speaker's
platform and made a moat dra
mntic speech to the court nnd the
jury. She said:
"I wish to thank you and the
gentlemen of the jury and n 11 who
were instrumental in mv acquittal
for your just and generous decision.

her speech, which she had
rendered in a dramatic style, Attorney
<i neral Donaldson made
a demand that she lie held for
carrying a pistol, and the ease
was entered, but no bail or other
formal court recognition nu^ accorded
the action.
The verdict was wildly cheered

situated in the middle of a block
of frame buildings, and very soon
it extended to the buildings on
both sides. The Bucket store at
the corner of Main and C hurch
streets, occupied by \V 1 (Jreen,
was totally destroyed, and also
the stores of ,1 C Baskin, A B
Purunt, W B Carnes, the old
postoflice, used as headquarters of
the police force, and Bate Bros.
By heroic effort* the drug store
of Dr. R K D nnis was saved, and
that stopped tho lire. One dwelling
house, occupied by Mr. Timinons,
u traveling salesman, was
also burned. He and his family
were absent, and the boys broke
down the doors and saved his
| furniture.
All the buildings were owned

the buildings. Some of those
merchants had small insurance on
their stocks, but not enough to

was shocked yesterday by
the accidental killing of Mr. Jno
Kibler of Hilton. Mr. Kibler
and a Mr. Ihicklcy were hauling
logs on a log cart. It seems that
he was standing just behind the
cart, when the chain that holds
the sweep broke, and this, flying
back, hit Mr. Kibler on the head.
Medical aid was at hand, but ho
never spoko after being struck,
and death came in a few hours,
lie will be buried tomorrow near
Ins old homo in Newberry county.
He was a <piiet, unassuming and
harmless man, a member of tho
Lutheran church, and made a good
citizen, ils was about f>0 years
old.
