received here today of the murder
of a negro named Unfits Salter by
a mob of white men near West
Springs, in Union county. For
the past several days the neighborhood
of West Springs has been
visited by a number of very de^
structive tiies, supposed to be the
work of an incendiary. Last

consisting of a horse, mule and
milch cow ? wore lost, as well as
a considerable amount of corn and
fodder.
Mr. Sanford Wellborn who
lives about seven mile* from West
Sprint:*, awoke last Friday night
to lind his barn in Haines. This
building was soon consumed with
verytbing it contained, which
consisted of two horses, a cow and
a crib full of corn. Saturday
night Mr. Sam Foster's ttore at
West Springs was destroyed by
lire.
After this last mentioned tiro
suspicion began to point strongly
to Unfits Salter, a negro farmer,
who lived on Mr William Smith's
place.
Early Sunday morning a mob
of white men, having obtained
information leading them to holier?
that Salter was responsible
for the outrages, visited the negro's
house Salter hearing thoin
outside came to the door with a
pistol in Ilia hand and it is raid
opened firo on the moV. After
firing one or two shots, he throw
up his hands and fell to the floor,
shot through the heart by a rifle

and disbanded without their identity
having been discovered by anyone
