niA.JOK MILLER WRITES AN t
INTERESTING LETTER <
FROM WASAINtiTOX. ,
Washington, Dec. 4th, 1800. '
Mh. Editor:?This scribe ar- '
rived safely in Washington Saturday
rnornig on time; ho met on
the way a Mr. Uoseborough, a
former citizen of Fairfield, S C.,
now of Florida, and private aecre
tarv of Senator Mallesy of that
State. I am indebted to him for
a nice boarding place, tlie Cutler
House, 22'J 3rd St., N NV, and
only three blocks from the Capitol.
I found Mr. Finley at the National
Hotel and ire went at once
to the Capitol. The members
were collecting in the House for
a caucus, as to who should be the
leader on the Democratic side.
Mr. Richardson of Tennessee was
elected.
I
You may remember that I jok-1
ingly said to some of my friends, I
uerore leaving Tor ** asmngtom, j
thJit there w?b a possibility of my (
being taken or mistaken for the
congressman from the 5th Dis? j
trict. While seated in the House
a Western inew^ member came up
and said, "From what State, sir " j
South Carolina. ''Member of the
House or Senate?" Neither,
South Carolina always sends big
men to Congress. I find that the
men are either Colonels or Judges.
Mr. Norton of South Carolina
said that he was the only private
here, but afterwards I heard him
accosted as Colonel. Mr. Finley
in a judge.
I can not say that the members
generally are ft handsome set of
men, and I would not dare say
that thoy wero not inte'lectually
,-trong? because of their size.
Vdil i-An nnt iniamn* fbn v?r!i.tvr
of -tvlo of dress? black coatH,
brown coats, gre* coats, blue
<on?s and "coats of many colors."
It does seem that there should be
some uniformity in the matter. It
is to l)c remarked with regret that 1
some of the members of Congress 1
are very profane, and among tlmir 1
accomplishments, they add to that
of "cussing," "chewing" tobacco,
too.
A gentleman said in my hearing
Saturday evening that Wash- '
ington whs a bad place ? next door
to hades, that this city could not
escape the doom of Sodom, if a

Sundays. The inquiry was made 1
if the additional nickel was to 1
caso his conscience for working (
on Sunday. ''No boss, conscience
. I
don't hurt me nohow."
I met .Judge Moon on Saturday, |
a member from Tennessee, and'
a brother of Mrs. Holdridge of!
our town. He is quite a handsome
gentleman, resembling his
sister vory much, and none of the
things said about other people can
apply to \ im, because ho is a real
judge and a man of fine ability. '
Messrs Finley, Lattimer, Norton,
Elliott and Talhert arc here. The <
other mom hers from South Caro- 1
lina, including tho Senators, hare
not arrived, unless they came in 1
this morning. Our members com
pare favorably, in fact I believe '
they ure above the average, as i
they all stand hic.h and are gen- 1
erally men of wntofTT.
I attended the Metropolitan M i
E church yesterday?wascordially
greeted at the door and eacorted 1
to the Sunday school room and ]
eated. They certainly have a
vay hero 4'of taking stranger*
n." In thin school, there is no
;hoir the whole school sing.
The thought occurred here,
hat my friend, who compared
Washington to Sodom, if present
vould change his opinion?that
ertainly thero were more than
en good women here to save the
?ity from a shower of tiro and
brimstone. After the school was
dismissed wo passed to the church
proper and services began. Dr.
Bristol is the pastor; his text:
Behold the man; .John xix-5. He
is quite an eloquent speaker, or
rather reader, as he used a manu
script.
This is the church that President
McKinlcv attends. Three
policemen also attend. One walkt
in front of the President from hi*
carriage into the church; tli*
other two accompany him or
either aide. The same order i?
observed in coming out of thf
church. The curious stop on the
sidewalks to tako a look. Mr
McKinley lifts his hat, bows as h<
comes down tho steps, quickly
enters his carriago and is rapidly
driven away.
I have written part of what j
have seen and heard since my arrival
in Washington ? it is woe
long I know ? I promise, if J
write again, to be more brief.

Mr Finley I was not admitted tc
tho House gallery to witness the
opening exercises, as each person
had to have a ticket,? he rush
for admittance to a circus could
not excel it. The crowd was tremendous, every
corridor, nook and
corner of the massive building
was tilled,- 1 am back at my

I left off yesterday in my at
tendance at tke M E church
(Metropolitan). I interviewee
President McKinloy's coachman.
He is a young, bright mulatto,
dressed in regulation livery, in
eluding of course the nlk heaver,
sod receives $t!n per month foi
his services. The turn out it
known us u hmdeuu, cost uhout
1200 dollars, silver mounted
without, rubber tires, and silk
finish within. The horses arc
bays and are valued at $500.
The harness are silver mounted,
very heavy, and valued about the
same as the horses.
In the afternoon 1 attended the
congregational church, where an
immense crowd assembled to hear
Mormonism and the anti-seating
of Mr Brigham Huberts, memberelect
from Utah, who it is said,
has throe living wive*, discussed
find cussdd. The speeches wore
all, as Josh Ashley would say;
"agin" Brigham. 1 don't think
Mr Brigham Roberts will he
seated. There was a lady, a missionary
from Utah, as well as s
gentleman from Salt Lake City,
who made speeches and mormon
ism and polygamy, were shown
up in all of its repultivencsn and
sinfulness. The sentiments and
arguments of the ajieakers were
applauded to tlio echo by both
Indies and gentlemen. The members
of Congress are receiving
?art loads of jietitions from everywhere
not to seat Mr Hrigham
Kol>erts. I have heard but one
man raise his voice for Brigham
Roberts and 1 am thankful that he
was not a members. Mr Finley
received a petition this morning
from our Van VVyck friend, that
will have due consideration and a
reply this afternoon.
