Seient ificuIIy ()Here. 1.
Columbus, Ga., Oct <5.?At an
early hour this morning Homo one
drove up to the home of T W
Bates, cashier of the Merchants
and Mechanics bank, in a hack
and delivered a note signed by
the chief of police, Wiley Will,
iarns, asking Mr Rates to come
to the bank at once as the chief
bad dicovered a plot to rob the
institution. The note said:
"Wait until 1 come. Don't
speak to any one on the force
even until I come, nor lot any one
see who you are. Above all, don't
let any one see you onter tho bank
nor have any ono with you, as
robbers are organized and have
five on tho watch. Anything will
attract them." Mr Rates' home
iB four miles from the city. Fearing
it was a scheme to eutrap him
he declined to come to the bank
He sent the noto to the chief of
police an hour later and ho pronouncod
it a forgery. As a mat*
ter of precaution, Chief Williams
put h guard around the hank until
morning. The police tonight arrested
the hack man and will hold
him for the present. He says the
noto was given him by a shabbily
dressed man in front of a saloon.
The funeral of Mr. D. E. Converse,
the founder of Converse
College, took .place Friday at
Spartanburg. There wero 2,500
people in attendance. The remains
were interred on the collego
campus, by the side of the
fountain in front of the main
building. This was in accordance
with his expressed wish and was a
fitting tribute of the college to the
memory of its benefactor
Unable to Uoturn the Compliment.
A Yorkshire farmer was asked
to the funeral of a neighbor's
third wife, and as he had attended
the funerals of the two others, his
own wife was rather surprised
when ho declined this invitation.
On being pressed, he gave bis reason
with some hesitation:
"Well, thee sees, lass, it makes
a chap feel a bit awkward like to
be alius accepting other folks'
civilties, when he never has nowt
o't' aooart of his own to ax 'em
back to."?New \ork World.

i U is sufficient to say that no one

Houston Post Describes Iler Despair
When Abused in a Newspaper
Controversy.
The lynutiful young girl who
had giadiaitcd only u year before
with the highest honors, rushes
into the family sitting room, and
Hung herself, with a storm of
sobs, upon the sofa.
t%What is it, my dear?"-asked
herfathei, soothing her gently.
"Has anything happened to dis
courage vou ?"
4'Papa," said the maiden, raising
her tear-stained face, t4I am
done with journalism forever.
When you allowed me to purchase
that weekly newspaper, I thought
that no occupation on earth could
tie so noble, so elevating and
powerful to scatter good and wisdom
throughout the world. When
I began editing the paper, every*
thing appeared bright and rosecolored.
"M y editorials were praised by
the entire State press, and I got
Mattering words of encouragement
front even the large
dalies. I was, oh, so proud of
the fact that, although a woman,
I had been admitted ns an equal
number of the great brotherhood
that exercises such an influence
upon the nr'nds and morals of the
people. Last week 1 wrote a
gentle criticism of an article that
appeared in a little weekly of toother
county. This, papa?this
is what I find in the next issue of
that horrid paper.''
The lovely girl handed her
father the paper and buried her
head upon the sofa pillow whilo
he read the following:
44 Wo would/ say to tho loathsome,
knockkneed, piebald jabberwock
that infests tho editorial
dugout of the Weekly Herald, Vejp
your shirt on. Tho disgusting
edioiic drivel that emanates from
tho clapped jawed? squirrel headed,
slab sided, puddle-duck that
spoils paper for that sewer pipe of
journalism should ?ret a nair of
buckskin, kickproof pants, or else
quit squirting such jobs of backhanded,
putrefied slime at decent
papers. If the hump-backed,
putty-faced vermin referred to
doesn't like our remarks, v?e will
call any day aud scatter a few
locks of hair and brass buttons
around said Herald office, or forfeit

d'apn," said the girl graduate,
in a low but decided voice, '-I
want you to buy me a cook book
and some long aprons. I am going
to stay at home and help
mother about the house."
