A Butter Poiuter.
Bad butter is frequently caused j
by keeping the cream from one
milking too long while saving it
for the next churning, as is sometimes
done when only ono or two
cows are used. Ripe and unri[>e
cream should never be churned
together. The sooner the cream
is churned after it is separated
from the milk the better.

Both Magistrates Removed.
The State, Aug. 30th.
Last night Gov. McSweenoy
aftor reading the solicitor's report
and the accompanying affidavits
carefully, decided to remove
both the magistrates?Uuy at Denmark
and Kennedy at Govan Me
forwarded to each of them the following
letter:
Columbia, Aug. 29, 1899.
Dear Sir: From official information
received by me 1 am satisfied
of your official misconduct in
the matter of extradition of G.
\V. M. Williams, and your commission
as magistrate is hereby
revolted, to take effect from this
date. You will turn over all
books and papers in your posession
l>elonging to your office to
your successor when he shall call
on you for the same.
Yours truly,
M. B. McSweeoey,
Governor of South Carolina.
The governor filed with the papers
the following written state*
ment of the reasons for his action:
In view of the report of Solicitor
Sawyer and the statement
therein contained and the evidence
furnished by the nffidaw's accompanying
the report in regard
| to the action of Magistrates S. G.
Hay and W. L. Kennedy appears
that said magistrates, instead of
ondoavoring to assist the agent of
Georgia in his efforts to arrest G.
W. M. Williams, a fugitive from
justice in that state, and for whom
the said agent had requisition papers
from the governor of South
Carolina, made in due form of
law, the magistrates, as it appears
from the report of Solicitor Sawyer,
assisted the said Williams to
escape arrest, and thus the ends
of justice have been thwaited.
Such being the facts in the case, I
do not consider these magistrates
worthy to hold the high and responsible
position of magistrate,
and they are hereby removed from
their office, aaid removal to tak*
effect from this date.
'Aug. 29, 1899."
His Narrow Escape.
They were talking at the Metropolitan
club the other night
about tho hard fighting and hard
drinking old generals of the American
army in its early days, and
some stories of old General Abercrombie,
"who never tasted water,"
went around.
"My father," said one of the
members, "once asked General
Abercrombie why it was that he
had such a natural distaste for
water.
j "'I'll tell you of an incident
that'll help to explain it,' was the
frank old soldier's reply. 'A
