Wheat Growers* Convention. j
? ?
Greenville News.
The wheat growing people about j -i
Greenwood and the people of the
town have decided to call a convention
of wheat growers of this
State, to meet the latter part of
August.
A convention was held in Mr. I
con, recently by the wheat grow, f
ers of Georgia which has resulted 11
in an enthusiastic determination | c
of Georgia farmers to give more j a
time, more acreage and more at I li
tcntion to this branch of farming |o
industry. i f
The same result can be accom. N
plished in this State. js
It is the intention of the pro j1
meters of the Greenwood conven- t
tion to have a number of wheat v
growers from Tennessee, North f
Carolina and Virginia present, to c
give information and also meth-lj
ods practiced in raising w heat in s
those States. i a
'PI I '
iui-iu uus mwuys ueen a com-j u
plaint that raising wheat in this
State has not paid; that the crop t
is too often a failure; that our t
soil and climate, or something n
else, aro not suitable for success- j u
fully growing grain. h
It is not proposed or expected v
that South Carolina will compete
\rith the great wheat growing n
States of the West; but it is cor- (
tain that we can cease to pay tribute
to those States and make our t]
own bread. We buy their Hour ^
and they buy nothing from us and I *
the balance of trade is always in jj
their favor. Keep the money at ^
home which we send to the West
for flour and improve our farms ,
and farming industries.
A good farmer, who makes his
& ' v
own biead and moat, said the oth- j
er day, that wheat straw paid ull I ^
the expenses of his wheat crop, j
N A Craig, of the Greenwood)
Craig Milling company, is promo- j j
ting the scheme for the conven-1.
tion. and is backed by Greenwood,
and there is no reason why the .
farmers should not take hold of I.
the matter and uiake it a great '
n s
success.
This is another step in diversifying
crops, and there is good j
money in it and farmers should
uiake arrangements to be in 1
Greenwood.
An effort is being made to raise' y
snough money to build a home |
for the presideut of Clinton Collego.
