The editor spent a couple of
davs in Lancaster last week and
while there took in the town generally.
Wo noted many improvenients
added in recent years and
others now in progress. We do
not hesitate to predict that thr
census next year will reveal an in
crease in population and wealth ol
one hundred per cent or more in
the past ten years. When it it
considered that Lancaster had nnl
made such rapid strides of pro
mess in all the hundred years 01
more of her previous existence
put together we might well ask.
What has inspired this new life
The answer is readily found on t
visit to her cotton mill, one of tin
best and best paying in the State
While there has been so nmcl
of material growth, however, then
is one thing that needs improving
much to give visitors a more favor
able impression, and that is hei
streets. Lancaster's public vvorki
have not kept pace with her pri
vate interests. Not that there hai
been no improvement along tha
line but it has been too unequal

hint here. We believe that call
ing attention and emphasizing this
feature by them is all that will h<
needed to make the public spirited
officials tuke fin now life in thai
direction. Developing the business
resources to the neglect o1
beautifying and making the towr
more attractive will invite thf
man who is looking for a place t<
locate for a few years to mak<
money, but if you want to encourage
permanent home seekers t<
locate you must a'so manifest i
lively interest in that which makei
the home attractive. We are glai
to see our neighbor prospering

VAN WYCK ITEMS.
Good rains have fallen around
Van Wyck, hut we seem isolated
from good seasons. We need
rain.
Miss Hodge, of Pineville, sell,
ing subscription hooks, spent last
Wednesday in Van XT yck. She
did not get many orders hero and
expressed herself as not being
very much pleased with our
thriving little village. Hook
agents some times complain of
their cold reception, and before
they finish up their work find it
warm enough.
Our wide awake mercantile
firm, Massey Hros, have sold out
their business to Messrs S II Me
Manns & Co. This firm is composed
of MrS N Mathews, Messrs
.1 H and S II Me Manus who have
iteen in business in Mecklenburg
county ami come here highly re
commended. Massey Bros., will
continue to furnish plantation supplies.
Mr Hyatt will continue in
business with them.
Miss Maud Tillman has declined
to teach the Cureton's Springs
school and has accepted a position
in the Denmark High School.
Dr J N Nishet, whose illness
was repoited last week, died last
Wednesday morning?in his seventy-sixth
year of age. Ills tive
sons were with him and did all
they could to relieve, and if possible
to restore him to health, but
had to yield to the inevitable.
His remains were placed in a
handsome, expensive steel casket
and conveyed by Undertaker
McCain of Waxhaw, driving a
pair of white horses to a hand-.
