A Short Description of Luray (.
Cave and Natural Bridge.

description of Luray Cave and
Natural Bridge might be of in-,
terest to manv of your readers. ; ?
Having visited these natural ,
wonders recently, I find that their j
fame and popularity exceed any ,
other spots in our South land. ;
Luray Cave was discovered in
1878 and shortly afterwards',
opened to the public. Since that'
time, its fume litis reached the re- I
mot est parts of the earth. On j'
entering the cave, we see ^Entrance
Hall" anil as we proceed
farther we see different chambers,
each named from striking resemblance
to objects of the outer ,
world. The Vegetable and Flower 1
Garden: the Fish Market; the ^ <
Cathedral with its silent organ:
the Bridal Chamber with its glit- (
tering stalactites; tho Ball ltoom <
with its polished floor and orches- {
tra stand; the Crystal and Coral .
springs; and others too numerous |
to mention are seen 'here. In 1
fact a minute description of this
cave would be impossible. It |
suffices to say that the formations <
found there arc wonderful, beauti- {
ful, and grand. The lowest depth
reached is 2(50 feet and the time
required to take in the important i
parts is 1A hours. Truly this is
a wonderful place, rivaling Mam- '
mom uavo and situated in "Old
Virginia." t
Natural Bridge, called by Jel (
ferson one of the seven wonders t
of the world, is in the immediate \
vicinity of the James river, at the t
point where it breaks through t
the Blue Ridge mountains, form* t
ing a sublime spectacle. The x
bridge spans a gorge 215 feet t
high and 100 feet wide through \
which Cedar Creek rushes to the i
river. The foundations and road- x
way arc of solid stone and the i
over hanging arch is perfect. <
Lace Water Falls, Hemlock Island,
Saltpeter Cave, and the Lost
River are just above the bridge.
These are all interesting points,
especially Saltpeter Cave because
it furnished material for making
gun-powder for the Confederate
Government during the war. The
grand* ur of Natural Bridge and
its vicinity has been told by ihe
