a negro who had waylaid him.
The negro had been discharge!
by Cutts, and, procuring a pistol
he secreted himself in the yar<
and fired upon the yardmaster,
the hall taking effect in the leg.
Captain Cutts drew his pistol ant
fired four shots at the negro
wounding him mortally. He diet
soon after the firing.

I came to Batosburg yesterday j

i health, and Hon. E. R. Stead man, i
Intendent of Batesburg. I have I
j taken charge of the smallpox out!
break here. There were 15 cases, !
j of which 14 were colored and one
j white.
1 dismissed from smallpox camp
j today eight cases, leaving seven
|on hand.
I found upon ray arrival a well!
regulated smallpox camp and a
camp of detention, both in isolat
ed places and under guard. With
but one exception (one white case'
and the family) all smallpox patients
and those exposed are in
quarantine. I have never found
| an epidemic at any place during
I all of my exp?riences as smallpox
I inspector which was under more
careful supervision, and I assure'
I that Batesburg is doing al' in its
power to stamp out the disease.
There is no more necessity for !
! a quarantine against Batesburg
I than there has been against any
other town or city in this State in
which smallpox prevailed. Peol

A Hoy Drowned at Monroe.

Monroe, June 11).-Isaac Boone,
a 16-year-old white hoy, was
drowned in the suburbs of town
today at 12 o'clock, while in
swimming in a large pool at the
town's rock quarry. A large hole,
from which a great deal of rock
has been taken, was full of water,
some 20 feet deep. The boy tried
j to swim across the pool and gave
! out, nearly carrying two small
companions down with him. The
body has not yet been recovered,
j owing to the irregularity of the
! bottom of the pit and the diilieult\
j in using a drag.
