The Acquittal of Crawford.
The State.
Crawford, the liquor constable,
has been acquitted by a Kershaw j
county jury of the murder of Mrs
Stuart in this city.
The expected has happened. .
iilb case was transterred to Ker- ^
bhaw in order that he might he
acquitted, and he 1ms been acquit- _
ted. We have had no illusions <.
on the subject. When the trans- i
far was made to Kershaw wo said,
knowing the county's partisan :
ship for the dispensary, that this
would be the result. The Camden
Messenger was indignant ,
e o (
thereat, and, if we remember t
aright, desired us to apologise to *
the jurors of its county for believing
them capable of bias in
their verdict. We did not apol :
ogise, and we do not do 60 now. y
Let it be admitted that the' r
prosecution did not make the best1 a
of its case: that it failed to pro-'
duce the bullet that had slain Mrs j
Stuart and thereby enabled the
j *
defense to make the suggestion ^
that she had been killed by her ! _
husband. It was an absurd sug- !
gestion and would not have had
weight with an unbiased jury.
n.,* *i.? i?: 1- - ?
uut, mo jui j i?:iu^ wuai 11 whs, i
it gave the color of an excuse for
doubting Crawford's guilt. This
was enough, and the man who r
killed a woman in her own home. v
We do not care to discuss the
case at length. IndigBation at the
hrutul and bloody work of the
State's liquor constabulary was .
long ago fatigued. There is no
use to protest or complain. While ^
this infamous law remains on the
Btatute books, backed by the in- j
famous constabulary system, there j
will be no security for any home. I
The agents who shoot old men ^
dowd in the highway and women *
at the threshold of their homes 8
will not be punished. Their v
machine makes them too strong. (
The influence of the constabulary, *
the officeholders, the jury-drawers, *
added to the current indisposition
*
of jurors to convict white men of :
murder must prevent their con^'
viction. There is no protection
for the citizen except his own arms?

State as strong as any?even
stronger, for it is a part of our
government.
There is but one way to pre->;
vent outrage and attain security, )
and that is by abolishing the;
wholo tyrannous and corrupt ;
system?a system that permits
hundreds of blind tigers to sell
openly, in view of the streets, i
while it enters women's homes;
with cocked revolvers to search i
for liquor and kill those who re8;st.
As long as the opponents
of the law continue, as in the last
session of the general assembly,
divided and contentious, they
will court the continuance of these
outrages.

London, .June 8. ? Special dis^atches
from Manila today say it
s reported this morning that
Vguinaldo has dissolved the Filipino
congress and has proclaimed
limself dictator.
Washington, .June 8.?The oficials
here aro in doubt as to*
vhether Aguinaldo in declaring
lis dictatorship is animated by a
lesiro to rid himself of his refactory
generals, Pilar and.
Lumar, or whether ho nims to
consolidate in his own hands the
lower to make terras of peace.
It is known from the reports of
President Schumann of the American
Philippine commission that
:hose two generals own only faint
allegiance to Aguinahlo and their
attitude towards the pence negotia
dons has made them ineffectual',.
:he civilian members on the Kilipiio
joint commission being completely
overawed by these gen
jrals. It is dominated by the
nilitary element controlled by
;hese generals. It is believed
lere that if Aguinaldo can bend
.hose men to his wiii and assume
iupreme control he will at once
nuke for peace, being able to
aecure laetter terms for himself
than he would otherwise.
