Glanders In Barnwell.
News and Courier: The governor's
ofliee is in receipt of a
letter from J. \V. Williams, of
Lee's, Barnwell county, stating
that glanders had broken out
among t'ie stock in that neighborhood,
and requesting that a
veterinary surgeon be sent to
take proper action. The matter
has been referred to the veterinarian
of Clemson college.
Capt. Arthur A Spitser an old
Confederate of Richmond, Va.,
was rohbod of $80. by pickpockets
at the depot in Columbia
while en route to the reunion last
Tuesday. Capt. \V L Uoddey of
Rock Hill also had his pockets
picked about the same time.
In order to show their appreciation
of Victor Bloc's bravery
during the recent war, the people
of Marion, his native town, have
bought a handsome loving cup to
present to him. 'Hie cup is a
beautiful one and cost $100.
Much has been said in the papers
about the velvet bean as a
manure and forage crop. Our
Banks correspondence shows that
it has been tried in this county
and will have a more extended
trial this year. We are glad that
the test is in hands that will make |

candidate for the present reunion.
The cruiser Raleigh came up to
the city today and anchored off

All day a fleet of small craft have
plied to her carrying visitors, and
Uapt. Coghlan and his officers
have been busy showing the handsome
little cruiser that helped

Charleston, May 11?The features
of the reunion today were
the addresses delivered in the convention
hall by Gens. Hampton
ind Wheeler. The former's was
antirely impromptu, the occasion
for it being the presentation by
him, in behalf of the ladies of
Charleston, of a handsome Confederate
battle Hag to the r. r. v.
Gen Wheeler spoke by appointment.
His address was to have
t>een delivered at the session ycs~
terday, but was postponed till tolay.
Its delivery required over
in hour, and it was largely historical.
There wero few references
to current events, and such as
were made wero not very striking
To each of these speakers a
royal welcome was accorded.?
Hampton was cheered to the echo
ind the delegates simply went
wild over Wheeler.
The business of the day was
routine for the most part.
There is considerable to do being
made over the resolutions offered
by Gen. Stephen i/. Lee
yesterday in reference to McKinley's
speech concerning the
Confederate dead. They simply
utirm tho convention's recogniLion
of the fact that the country
is reunited. They were referred
to a committee and now it looks
very much as though they were
ajoing to cause trouble. A good
many delegates oppose them
violently and should they ever get
!>eforo the convention there is going
to be a row.
Tho memorial services to Miss
Winnie Davis were held at 1
Yclock anil were impressive in
the extreme. Tho address of the
occasion was delivered by (Jen.
D. II. Young, of Louisville, Ky.
At the auditorium tonight the reinion
chorus and orchestra gave
i concert. The program was
nade up exclusively of confederite
war songs. The audience was
i brilliant one and numbered
