AN INTERESTING COMPARISON. Tax Levies arid Assessments PrevioiiH to 1890 and Now. Greenville Nona. The Columbia correspondent of I The News and Courier sends that j> newspaper iin instructive table of taxation and assessments in this | state during the last 17> years. From this we are reminded that from 1873 to 1890, under the "old ring, "state tax levies ranged from mills, the lowest, which wn in 188(5, to 5}{, the highest,, which was Id 1889. In the same period the total assessment of property in the state ran from $ 141,000,000, the lowest, in | 1 s8t>, to if 150,009,0^0, the highest in 1890. Soma people may remember that a person known as B. R Tillman, and railing himself a Reformer and the "Moien" who am was to lead the people from the bondage of high taxes and the wilderness of debt, frequently described these taxes aa burdensome and grievous, and said they di? were caused by wastoful, extrava- W( gant and corrupt administrations, and bamboozled and debauched *o1 legislatures. We agreed with him that taxes were too high and heavy, and that there was waste and extravagance. He was elected governor in 1MU1. The table shows that in ciw'ht years since that time the th lowest stats levy has been 4^ . mills, three years, ami the highest, in 1 s;?2, i?A mills. In ths Niinui period a"*e?ament* have ranged from $ 150,000,0<>o, the iwii, i t. ...... K1 lUTTT?*!, Ill 1 ?* " ' I * I I I I the present figures. In other words, the figures prove that in the eight years of "reform" more money has been collected from . n the people and spent than in any, eight years under "the old ring." f I We go further and say that the present taxes represent far more bales or cotton, bushels of corn 1 ^ and pounds of meat than they i did in the wildest daya of Radical ^ robbery. Mr. Tillman says nothing now of extravagance and waste, of debauchery or oambouzling. We hsve not changed our opinion. Wo yet believe that there is ex-i " % travaganee and waste, that after eight years of full power, after , the constitutional convention and i all, the people ace bring burdened more heavily than they ought to be I>ur<toned. It makes no practical difference to the taxpayer whether the money taken from him is stolen or squandered. lle| lose-, it just the same.
