A NOVEL HAUL OF CONSTABLES.
\lno Obtained a Book With
Charge a Thereon for Drinks ?
A Readable Story From
Spartan bur?;.
Special to The State.
Spurtnnbur^, ( Vt. 21.?Quite
i sensationoccurred at the Spartan
nn on Wednesday night, which ,
lid not become generally known :
intil late in the day yesterday.
Hie constables stationed at this,
ilaco suspected that there was
whiskey being sold in the billiard
uid pool room conducted on the j
first floor of the inn by B. S.
DooUttle. No scheme they could
lovise would furnish evidence to
convict, and no whiskey could be
found in his possession. On
Wednesday the cllicers secured a
search warrant for the premises,
including the iron safe. Early in
the night the constables, accompanied
by Deputy Sheriff Landrum
Foster, repaired to the hotel
and proceeded to search. Finding
nothing on the outside they
demanded admission to the safe.
This was securely locked and no
body about the hotel would admit
that he had anything to do
with the safe or that he even
knew the combination. This
aroused the suspicions of the officers
more than ever, and they
determined to sec inside that safe.
By this time a large crowd had
collected and some disorder was
threatened, but .John Vemon,
I'hief of police, came ulong and
the big drummer who was doing
the "cussin" promised at once to
join the church. Nobody claimed
the safe and nobody had any interest
in it, so the officers had no
trouble in rolling it into a wagon
and carrying it away. They carried
it on Factory hill whore Constable
Bob Floyd lives and set up
and watched it all night. Early
yesterday morning they secured a
set of tools and proceeded to make
an entrance. i>oring into the
door they broke the lock and revealed
the contents. They found
five and one-half gallons of peach
brandy in pint and half pint hotties,
glasses, siphons, etc*, an account
hook, papers, notes, mort
pages, etc., a photograph of H. S.
Doolittlc and $f>l.f>0 in money.
Nobody claims any of the property
except the safe itself, which
belongs to the owers of the hotel
and had been leased by them to
J. S. Brubaker.
The account hook shows large
accounts for whiskey on quite a
number of the prominent citizens
of this place. The names of men
a ho were not known to ho drinking
men appear on the hook for
sums ranging from $1 to $17.
Warrants have boon issued for
Doolittlo, Brubnkor and some
man working tor Doolittlo. The
constables think they have a aeries
of good eases, as they will use the
account book ami also call in the
various persons as w itnesses whose
names appear there.
It may be stated that Doolittlo
pleaded guilty at the last term of
court in two cases for selling
liquor and paid a tine of $100 in
each case.
