THE LEDGER. Th urlow S. Csv?*!or. .EDITOR, AND M A NAG Kit. WKDNKSDAY, OCT. 12, 1 SOS. The State hoard of control 1ms decided to discontmnc the dispensary at Tir/.ah, the only dispensary in York county, after Nov. 1-t. d?>o citizens of the township petitioned for its removal. The State hoard of control ordered the Chester dispensary closed last Thursday and the re tuoval of Dispenser MeDaniel. It appears that the removal of tho^ dispenser was made for incompetency. Col. Wilie Jones of the '2d Kegt. S. C. V., has been petitioned by many prominent business men of Columbia and tlirouh- I I out the State to resign the p< sition : he holds as colonel of the Regiment and to resume his position : as cashier of the Carolina National Bank 111 our capital city. And so Major John F. .Jones, of Blacksburg, is to try for con - i gress again in this district! Jf, ! when the major first came down south, hediad espoused Democracy and gotten himself right on the . ! nionov utiestion. he would have probably stood u good chance for ( political preferment That he has tnanv (pialities that recom- ; mend him as a representative there is no question. lint in the wrong party and wrong as to the financial issue, and with an opponent like Finley, his chances in the sea of polities are not much better than are the chances of a cluster of thistle-down in a . cyclone. ?Yorkvillo Enquirer. Excellent philosophy from the Gaffney Ledger: "Since the election the newspapers have been kept busy publishing 'cards of thanks' from the successful, as well as from many of the unsuc- ! eessful candidates. We hope the season for ail these pushing 'hanks it over, and we could wish it not to return. These cards arc all ! the product of a pernicious scnti- j ment, that is, that the people ' elect a man to olliec for his own personal benefit, whereas the true I principle is, or ought to he, that they elect him for their own bene- j fit. We can hardly see how a 1 man with a proper appreciation | of the duties and responsibilities : of otliee can believe or feel that his personal thanks are due the public for giving him one. We hope the custom will he abolished, | for it is in keeping with an idea ! already too prevalent, 'hat office j is a favor instead of a trust.'' Congratulations to our contemporary upon its discovery. Why didn't we all think of that before. ! ?The State. The Root of the Kvil. Kdgefield Chronicle. One great trouble is that the south buys too much and sells too little. The balance of trade, so called, is always against our section. The necessary consequence is poverty. ^ mjva o 1 Cherry Pectoral is the best remedy that I know of for La Grippe." Rev. J. K. CHASE, South Hampton, N. H. ! I rhe Author of the System in South Carolina Admits the Fact. Piedmont Headlight. 1 The Columbia State has under-1 taken a very important work in interviewing the newly eleeted | legislature as to how they stand on the dispensary, high license and prohibition. Not enough counties have as yet been heard from to settle the issue, but from the answers received it looks very niulh as if the present dispensaryl law is doomed. The prohibition sentiment has developed strength, | while local option seems to lead the dispensary advocates. A few days since a Headlight j reporter conversed with a well 1 posted gentleman from Columbia, i who is a staunch friend to the dispensary. We asked him his opinion as to what the next *e?- I sion of tho legislature would do j with the dispensary. lie an-i swored: "If it stands at all, the presi ent 'aw will be so amended and revolutionized that you wouldn't | recognize it if you met it in the road. But 1 would not be sur-1 prised if tho prohibitionists and the local open advocates united 1 and passed a strict prohibition la?v for South Carolina. Whenever tho issue between prohibi- J tion and the dispensary was made, prohibition won by a crushing | majority. In Anderson county I the people voted direct on tho! dispensary, local option and pro- I hihition and prohibition won I overwhelmingly. If tho friendsi of tho dispensary save tho law, j they will have to rally their for* | cos and work hard. But even; they will have to submit to revolutionizing changes in tho present | law. In the first place, the people of every county will be per-' nutted to vote on the issue and j say whether or not they want a dispensary established within i their borders, and I believe that three-fourths of the counties in our State will declare for prohibition. Then the constables must j go, for there is violent opposition to them. They had as well begin to hunt down another job. Then I believe that the profit feature of the dispensary law will be omitted, and the strictest kind / i . - oi regulations thrown around the sale of Ikjiioi s. "I uni thoroughly convinced," J continued tho gentleman, "that' the dispensary is now managed honestly and in a business-like manner. Hut a while buck those connected with the State dispensary in Columbia got to fussing among themselves, and making serious charges against one an-1 other, and the people were led to believe that the whole thing was reeking with corruption, and an | unjust prejudice was built up | against the business. These men in Columbia have simply gone to I work and killed the goose that laid them a golden egg manvj months. I am a staunch friend to the dispensary, as you know, and now that the courts have declared the law constitutional, it ought to he given a fair trial and ; no material changes made. Hut my opinion is that it will take hard work by the friends of the dispensary if th?y can save a h remnant of the law to build upon j( tgain, after prohibition has proven impracticable, as it surely \vill lo."
