HIE LEDGER. Til m How S. CJartor, I EDITOR, AND MANAOKli. WKDNKSDAY, .11 I.Y 20,* 1898. Among tlio pleasant little milt, tors developed ill the happy little friendly contest for congress in the Pee Deo district are charges by Candidate Kllerbe that Candi date Norton eloped in the night time with a lend of seed cotton belonging to somebody else and was convicted before an ecclesiastical court for lying. We have become so accustomed to these episodes 111 our politics that we scarcely notice them now but it is well to keep the fashionable stylo in campaign oratory before the attention of a reformed, redeemed, elevated, disenthralled and happy people. These descriptive terms aro used in deference to the reform party, which seems to bo the only party there is in South Carolina now and to curry favor with the dominant element. The Greenville? News, as an insurgent and the sole remaining relic of the "old ring''?which it fought while tlvo rinuj was h ring and had tlio support of many who haye now yielded allegiance to the now and stronger ring?fails to see that there is any very vast improvement anywhere. But our uohle leader Benjamin Ryan Tiil man told us eight years ago that wo would surely he redeemed, disenthralled, enlightened, uplifted, regenerated and made happy, virtuous and beautiful if we followed where his (laming ban ner led. As we can not doubt our noble lender or suppose that ho was giving us the ordinary political song and dance of commerce to get a job for himself, we must believe that all those happy things have hapjxMied to us, even though we do not know it. Our noble leader is a kind of j political faith euro doctor. All we have to do is to believe strongly enough what he promised us and it is so, we suppose, even if lesser noble leaders do publicly attaint each other as guilty of all the crimes in the decalogue and the catalogue, from sequestration of ?icd cotton to manslaughter and arson.?Greenville News. MURDER IN LEXINGTON. Governor ()lTers Reward for Slayers of Mrs Ly brand. Governor Ellerbo received a letter from Lexington yesterday informing liiui of the murder of Mrs I.ybrand, there a day or two ago. The crime is one of the black est ever recorded in that county an>l is shrouded in mystery, and the citizens of Lexington requested the governor to offer a leward for the apprehension of the perpetrators of this foul deed. Details of the murder are of the most meager -ort, but it seems that the murdered woman's body was found in the road near her borne, where she had been shot do vn by the erimina'. Mrs Ly brand lived alone and it is believed that some dastard took advantage of this to outrage her and then to cover his tirst crime, ho murdered her, thereby adding another crime to his already guilty conscience. The governor, upon learning these facts, offered a veward of fl50 for the apprehension and conviction of the guilty party or parties. ?The State 16th inst. The majority of the guesU every season are South Carolinians, which accounts largely for the fact that the company has a leputation each year, for being so cultured and charming. The hotel is beautifully i kept ithis season, the faro being excellent, the rooms clean an I comfortable and all the recreations possible to summer resorts easily available.
