Charles V Gridley, com nander
of tho cruiser Olympia and one of
the heroes of the brilliant victory
at Manila, is dead. The announcement
of his death was re
reived by the Navy Department,
late this afternoon, in a cablegram
from Paymaster Gait, of
the navy, dated at Kobe, Japan,
June 4th. and directed to Sec i
retarv Long. Tho dispatch con- j
laincd this simple statement:
'Captain Gridlev died to-day.
Remains accompany me on Coptic."
Captain Vernon (trolley is the
first otlicer of great prominence

the existing war with Spain. As
