!?
Anderson, May 25.?A sensa- 1
tion was created today by the '
death of Elbert Harris, a negro
confined in the county jail here. ?
Ho was brought from Iva in this 1
county last Friday. Coroner ?
Nance summoned a jury and held A
the inquest. 1
C A \V McCullough, sworn 1
said: "1 am a constable under J 1

After traveling some two or three

miles, was met by a party and
negro was taken away from me. I
I could not tell how many were (
in the party: probably 20. They 1
told me to wait and they would |
return him in about an hour. A |
man?1 don't know who he was? |j
came up and told me to drive
around on the other side of the j'
i road and I would find him I '
drove there, found him and
brought him to jail and left him <
with Mr Green. The negro was i
lying on the ground when I found 1
him. lie said he had been whip- |
ped.
The jury returned the vediet
that deceased came to his death
from the effects of wounds inflicted
by unknown parties.
An interview with Constable s
McCullough brought forth the
fact that on Wednesday nLdit last

burned. Suspicion fell on Elbert J
Hums, with his father and oroth- i
or, who are now in jail. A search
of their house revealed startling
things. Five or six guns were j j
found belonging to various poo-;
pie; also railroad tickets and other!
articles, implicating them in the1
burning of the depot at lva some
time ago: also damning evidence j
of participation in the burning of ,
the postoflice and other buildings.
Elbert Harris was a slender,
negro about 18 years old.
