A Hundred Cases of Smallpox. ^
The State has information that
there arc nearly a hundred eases f
of smallpox at the mill town of ,j
Pelh'im in this State. In a letter h
to the Stato it is said: 'The chair- e
man of the Greenville hoard of ,,
health is authority for the state- p
ment that there are nearly 100
cases of small pox at Pel ham, a j
mill town on the lino between
Spartanburg and Greenville coun ^
ties. Dr Jones, the chairman, I
understand, has instructed the j
secretary of the hoard to write to 'j
the State hoard of health, sug- c
gesting that they take hold of the {
matter. I do not know that the ^
Greenville secretary has done so, A
hut Dr Jones seems to think the
situation a grave one. ,
'The mill authorities held to the
chicken pox theory and called in
Dr \V C Black of Greenville, who
was the chief supporter of the J
chicken pox idea. The disease
has assumed such large propor- i
tions that the mill men and Pel- <
ham doctors are now coming to
their senses, and two or three '
physicians went to Dr Jones for 1
advice.' i

Charleston, Feb 22.?The in- *
formation of the suicide of Mrs
Crib, the housekeeper of the Jan t

ors, just outside of Mount Plea- '
sant, was received in the city to- t
day. She drank the contents of a 1"
laudanum vial on Saturday, and v
died in terrible agony. The deep (
appears to have been most deliber- *i

50 years of age. She had recently
been ill, and it is presumed
