Homicide in Waxhaw.
On last Thursday afternoon
the usual peace and good order
of "Waxhaw was broken by a
homicide on the principal street
of the town. The facts, so fas as
we have been able to learn them,
are as follows:
Alonzo Jones, a colored boy.
about sixteen years old, was passing
Messrs C Broom & Sons' store
when Judge Arthur, another ool
ored boy, aged about twenty years,
who was sitting in front of the
s*ore asked Jones if he (Jones
could trot. Jones replied that he
could trot but that he did nol
wish to do so. Arthur then arose
and told .Jones Miat he had to trol
and advanced toward him. Jonet
walked otT across the street an<
was followed bv Arthur, wlie
picked up a stick, hit him ant
kicked bihi and commanded bin
to trot. .Jones walked on ant
Arthur advanced on him again,
this time, some witnesses testify,
with a knife. Jones then pullet
a pistol and shot Arthur in the
I)roast. The wounded man walk
ed a few steps and fell dead.
Jones was arrested and had ji
preliminary hearing before Mayor
J E McCain, of Waxhaw, and
Esquire Henry McWhorter. Jonesis
now in jail here awaiting trial
at the next term of Superior

A pathetic proof of the affection
and regard General McGowan
bore his soldiers during the war,
was afforded a few days before
his death. During a period of
delirium the old general believed
himself be engaged in battle.
He gave orders to his men and
called for reinforcements.
When a member of his family
handed him a tumbler of milk he
took it in his hands, merely tasted
it and then with a kindly smile
handed it back saying, 'The sob
diers are as thirsty as I am. Give

negro leaders in Beaufort
county to defeat the "poor white
men" they were 'Conservatives'
who had seen rod the Democratic
nomination in that county; the
man v.ho had tickets with these
Kcpuhlican negroes' names on
them printed and sent out, at the
expense of the Democratic State
committee. Who is Irhy? Whv,
Irby is the man who secured the
votes of the Mack Republicans in
the legislature to help him defeat
