Tom Carter, Colored, Saves a Little
\ White (Jlrl from ti Runaway Tcam.
A colored Columbian distinguished
himself yesterday by a life-saving feat
which, while it did not involve his
personal pe-il, was yef of a character
entitling him to high praise.
Mr John W llendrix of Aexington
county had come to the city to make
some purchases, driving his wife and
two little childron in a wagon drawn
l>V that lusus naturae, a frisky mule,
lie stopped his team at Plain street,
the side entrance of 3/imnaugh's uew
store mirier the Grand Central hotel
j and leaving his family iu the wagon,
went In to buy Home goods. The mule
wan facing eastward;sometliiug started
it and it swung round abruptly 'oward
the west, upsetting Mrs Hendrix and
the little boy out of the wagon, and,
turning tnto Main street, dashed at
full speed down that thoroughfare*
The little girl, Id I In. a lass of six or
i seven yoars, liad been thrown into the
bottom of the wagon'and could hardly
be ceen by the people on the sidewalks;
but Tom Carter, a stout young co'ored
man employed at HtrieklHud's stables,
had a glimpse of her as the wagon
dashed by him and instantly set out in
pursuit.
It was a hard race, though short.
Opposite The Ktate offlee Ckrter, who
ran like a deer, reached the wagon,
jumped up on it, snatched the liitle
I girl from her perilous position, jumped
out, ami seating her on his shoulder
returned in triumph to MimnauRh's
| store where he delivered her to her
I parents. As lie passeu through the
crowd brought out to the sidewalk by
the exciting incident, lie received a
shower of coin testimonials to iiis
gallantry.
Strangely enough, the mule slackened
its spted as soon as tlie child had
been taken from the wagon* and,
while turning McKay's corner and
heading in the direction of 7/cxington
was seized and atopped.
Had the rescue not been so quickly
made tiie little girl would almost certainly
liavo been thrown out of the
wagon and seriously injured, if not
killed.?The State, IStli iust.
