by that Klaus naturae, a frisky mule,

and leaving his family in the wagon,
went In to buy some goods. The mule
was facing eastward;sonietliliig started
it and it swung round abruptly 'oward
the west, upsetting Mrs Hendrix and
the little boy out of tho wagon, and,
turning tnto Main street, dashed at
full speed down that thoroughfare.
The little girl, Lille, a lass of six or
I seven years, had beeu thrown into the
I bottom of the wagon'and could hardly
I be .-ceil by the ;>eiple on the sidewalks;
but Tom Carter, a stout young co'ored
man employed at Strickland's stables,
had n glimpse of her as the wagon
dashed by him and instantly set out in
pursuit.
It was a hard race, though short.
Opposite The State office Carter, who
ran like a deer, reached the wagon,
jumped lip on it, snatched the liitle
girl from her perilous po.-dtion, jumped
out, and leafing her on his shoulder,
returned in triumph to Mimnaugh's
! store where lie delivered her to her
parents. As lie passed through the
crowd brought out to the sidewalk by
the exciting incident, lie received a
shower of coiu testimonials to his
gallantry.
Strangely enough, tlie mule slackened

been taken from the wagon* and,
while turning McKay's corner and
heading in the direction of .Lexington
was sei/.ed and stopped.
