Itrcommentlcil to Merry,
The Jury which convicted Ramuel
Crawfo-d of the murder of Everett
Hood recommended him to the mercy
of the Coyrt. T|)li recommendation
was doubtless made under the Iropress
ion that a leas sentence than
death would he im|>osed. The Judge,
however, as bound to do, lmj>osed the
death penalty. Ira B. Jones, Esq.,
the attorney fer the prisoner intends
applying to the Governor for a commutation
of sentence and to this end
has a petition aigned by all the members
of the Jury, the members of the
bar, tiie county officials and a large
number of the beat ?hd most thoughtful
citizens of this county. It is the
fixed belief of the best portion of our
community that Crawford should not
lie huiiged, and executive clemeuey in

would pieet general approbation.
A Delightful Fort Lawn
In company with a uumber of lady
friends, on Friday last, we boarded
the traiu for Fort Lawn, a pleasant
and growing little village on the Railroad,
to join in a basket pic-nic, and
to recreate generally. On arriving we
were conveyed iu a hack to tho residence
of Capt. Jesae Clifton, about
one mile West-of Fort I^awn, where,
in A grove uear by, were asaembled
about onp hundred people, whose
amiling countenances foretold a gala
day. There were married people and I
children, in that happy throng but,
for the most part, there were gay
young men and lovely young ladies.
Soon music was diapented by the
Richburg band and those fond of
dancing repaired to. Capt. Clifton's
bouse and enjoyed the innocent amuse

rest of the pleasure seekers found
amusements suited to their tastes until
diuoer was announced, when all
repaired to a table loaded with the
choicest eatables that the season
afforded or that feminine ingenuity
could devUe, and partook to the
satisfaction of the inner man.
Dinner over, the various amuse,
ments were resumed. Borne to dancing
went, some to strolling, while others
preferred to sit under the shady bowers
of a large oak and whisper their sweet
hula nothings. Thu? was the day so
pleasantly spent that it was slowly
and reluotantly that wa began to
gather up our little party, just before
train time, to quit this scene of hilarity
and mirth. The day wm one of the
most pleasant we ever spent, and we
are sure tbat the "widow" and "old
maids'' will want to go back again
very eoon.

[For the I^edger.
Ssplanatory.
It has U'on brought to our attention,
that,notwithstanding the specific form
of the call under which the Sunday
School Convention in to assemble at
Salem Chiirch, July 3d, 4th, some misapprehension
exists an to the nature of
said call ; and the constituency of raid
convention.
At the session of the South Carolina
Conference, convened at Sumter, Dae.
12-17, 1883, under special resolution,
it was recommended, "that, as far as
"practicable, there shad be formed a

"County within the l>oun<is of jth?
"Conference, and that the pastor or
"pastors of the church or churches
"located at the respective county seats,
"shall he charged with organizing
"such Conventions."
It is in conformity with this action
of tl.e South Carolina Conference that
the Convention of which we write has
been called and is to assemble.
During the discussion which attended
the passage of the resolution
above quoted, the point was raised as
to what should be done in those counties
where Conventions, under the
inter-denominational call and form,
had been organized and ex-Utod. If
we remember correctly the position
assumed,and the counsel that prevaled,
touching that point, it was thus: That
where such Inter-denominational C0tiventions
existed, we would continue
to work, in this great and blessed
cause, through, and in, that fbi'ni of
organization ; hut where such Conventions
had not been organized, or
did not exist, it would become the

proceed under the resolution.
80 far as tlie feelings of the writer of
this is concerned, the. mingling, in
"the unity of the spirit in the bond of
peace," in the inter-denominational
form, that the "arm of the Loid" may
he "levealed" to all alike is more to be
desired. This, too, is iu accord with
tho broad Protestant KvangelicalChristian
spirit of the day, which, we
rejoice to know, is sweeping away,
with the breath of the Master's love,
(as that love will ever do when it
pioperly moves the heart) not only
seotariau, but sectional, higotiy and
alienation, and preparing the way for
tlie standards of the cross, undeflhe
universality of the atonement, to be
erected upon every hill-side, plane and
valley of earth. For did not "Uod so
love the world as to give his only
begotten Son. that whoaoever beWeveth
on him might not perish but liAve
everlasting life?"
But. so far as this writer is also concerned,
there was no knowledge, not
even of any previous movement for
the organization and establishment
of an inter-denominational Sunday
School Convention for Lancaster
County, and hence, fto far as his movement
was concerned, the spirit of
loyalty to his own church consists,
rendered It o^]igj^ory, that the movement
should he under the provision
made and provided.
In conclusion, we feel that we hut
express the heart of our Methodist
brethren all, when we say, that we
cordially invite, aud will heartily welcome,
our beloved brethren of other
and all christian denominations, In
attendance upon the sitting* of our
Convention, and to give us the btnetlt
of their counsel aud experience,though
they may not be integral parts of the
same. Respectfully,
A. A. Gilbert,
Chairman Executive Committee.
