?The appearance of cotton in the
market reminds us of the many promises
made the LUMBER to pay up
from the proeeeds of the first hale.
To be candid, gentlemen, we need all
that is owing the Ledqkk, ami if wc
had not had confidence in you, we
would not have credited you.
?It is with pleasure that wc acknowledge
a cull from our iovial, redhot
Democratic friend, Mr. W. W.
Perry, Deputy Auditor of Lancaster
County, who was in town on Thursday
last. Look out, Carter ; from circumstances
occurring here, we are led to
believe Bill contemplates changing the
maimer of his living. He put on a
great many airs while here, recited
r poetry, and looked awfully "spoony."

Mr. Editor:?I had concluded to g
gay nothing further in regard to stock n
running ad libitum on the streets, but
hnving read "Warden's" defense, I venture
a brief response, trusting that it
may fiud space iy your paper. ?
In roaard to the committee referred .
i toby "wiiiSon", I would say, that we
have a body of men invested with r
greater power than such committee
possibly could have, whose business it ;
is to look after the wclfarcof the town;
and we vainly hoped that they would
have taken some steps for improve- "
ment in regard to the subject in ques- ,
tion ere now. This committee consists
of an In^cndent and four Wardens.? ^
Of course our worthy corresj>ondcnt
constitutes one of that number, and "
can it be possible that he sways the 1
sceptre over the rest? or are they ap- ,
preheusive of being on the un]>opulnr I
gide us regards numbers? Men have !
always met with opposition in the discharge
of duty, yet have invariably ^
; come <??t on the right side. We are w
always right in the discharge of duty. a
! Duty and interest go hand in hand.?
I am proud of the boldness with which
the Ledoeu has shown its disapprobation
of the present arrangement.
"Warden's" informer has certainly S
informed him incorrectly in regard to
Observer's fence. It can be nrovon
that he has as good a fence around his ^
premises as is in town, and whether he
raises hu own h >g and hominy or not, '
he generally has enough and to spare.
There is one thing certain that he does 1
not depend upon the 'street scavenger' a
as drawn by 'ourspeciul artist' in your
last issue for his furnisher of bacon.? U

for membership, among whom wc believe
tl^erc ate those who will make
pillars Tfi^tbu^tourch. From time to
time during1 the meeting, many presented
themselves at the altar for
prayer, anxiously inquiring after the J
way of Life. May they all become i
happy christians in this life, and be in '
that number that shall shine forth us
the sun in the Kingdom of their
Father. Kev. J. W. Wolling was '
with us from Friday till Sunday evening.
His sermons were with power
and demonstration of the Holy Spirit. 1
