Gode ,'s Lcidy's Book.
The /uly number has come to hand, filled
as usual with splendid engravings and interest*
ing reading. It is decidedly the best Magazine
of its class published in this country and well
deserves the immense populaiity which it oh.
taihs. The June number, from some cause,
foiled to rea.ch us, and we would thank the
publishers to supply it.
Bill Arp's Letters.
We sre indebted to the Editor of the Metropolitan
Record. John Mullaly, New York, for
a copy of "Bill Arp." containing *11
written by this popular humoi iat during and .
since ths close ot the war. It is well printed,
humorously illustrated, andiichly bound. The
neatness of style, the splendid steel engraving
ot the author, lion. H. C. Smith, and the numerous
comic engravings with whish it is em>
bellished, make it a cheap work at |! 60.
Our copy is not to lend.
Gen. Kilpatrick,
We learn front our Washington dates, that
an important c.ise is in preparation against Gen.
Kilpalriek, at Washington, founded npen charges
prefenad by Capt. Williams, of tba United
States navy. Nothing, at present, has transpired
to inake known the merits of the matter,
eicapt that there is a woman connected with it.
Should the Government presume to near all
the charges that could be presented atrainat i
this thieving, aacrilegous btfrbaiian, affecting j
liis private character as a gentleman, and the
dignity of the office he helJ under the Government,
it would have its hands full for all
time to come. There is sufficient evidence in
oar own State to ?ll a book of several thousand
pages.
The Fe ?ians.
The Fenian excitement seems to have, for
the present, completely subsided. Toe exiled
patriots of old,Ireland, who went to '.he border,
to make a diversion in favor of a grand movement
upon their mother country, have returned
to their homes, satisfied, uo doubt, with their
experience.of over-running sad taking posses,
ion of a country eonauiaudiug tho means and
resources requisite for the maintenance of a j
powerful government; a government which has
withstood the bloody shocks of ago*. Geueials
Sweeny, Spear, and other of the leading spirits,
who were arrested by the UnitedSutes av.thoii
ties, have been paroled to appear for trial when
wanted. About 160 of tho Fenians were cap.
tured in Canada?mostly while struggling and
now hold by the Cauudian authorities subject to
n court martial. Whether the United Slats#
Government will maku any intercession in bohalf
of A msriran citizens now imprisoned iu
Canada, or leave them to the tender mercies of
Canadian courts-uiartial, ramaina to ho seen.
