OUR MARTYRS.
UY PAUL H. IIAYNK.
I am Bitting lone and weary,
On tho hearth of my darkened room,
And '.he low wind's miserere
Ma^es sadder the midnight's gloom;
There's a terror that's nameless nigh uio,
There's a phantom spell on the air,
And inetliinks that the dead g'ide by me,
And the breath of the grave's in my hair I
'Tis a vision of ghastly faces,
Ail pallid, and worn with pain.
Where the splendor of manhood's graces
Gives place (o a gory stain :
Ip a wild and weird > roc fusion
Ihey sweep by my siai tied eyes,
And stem with theii fate's Tuition,
tsoein melting in blood red .-.hies.
Have thev come from the shores supernal ?
Have th-y pissed from the spit it's goal,
'.Neath the veil of loe life eternal,
To ijawn on my shrinking soul ?
Have they turned from th* choiring angels,

Hath wrought hi the loved o! earth*
Vain die.tin ! 'mid the far off mountains
They lie wheic the dew mists weep,
And the munitur of ruouiului fountains
Breathes over their painful sleep ?
On the breast ol the lonely meadows,
Safe, sate fioin the despot's will,
They rest in the star lit shadows,
And then brows ure white and still !
Alas! lor tho vanii-hed glory
01 a thousand household spells.
And alas ! for the tearlul story
01 the spoil's fond farewells !
By the flood, on the tield, in the forest,
Our braves hava yielded breath.
But tiic shafts that have smi'ieu sorest
Were launched by a viewless death!
O, Thou! that hast charms ol healing,
Descend on a widowed land.

Mksshs. Euirous : I have hearn folk*
sat of late, that our head men iu Washingtun
has had ? powerful tu do 'bout
the nigger buro, ami as I cant ad/.actly
onderstand this buro business, I take the
liberty tu ax in every body at once about
it, through your paper. 1 want tu know
if all us niggers is to git buros of our
own, to keep forever a fin all claim*
f-, ?
Sherman'* men included ; or is it onlv
head* of families that will git the buro*.
I onderstan that Mr. Johnson ia agin our
having '.he burns, he says they will coat
too much ; he savs the man who wants
to go into the buro business axes (or 12
inill'ons In start with, and will want as
, much more te run the machine to keep
the buro in good order.
Well, Mr. Editors, I think if they would
let some of our high larnt white folks go
to Washingtun and tell these head men
our situation, thev would give up the
buro business, an all comedown and help
us to hoe corn an cotton an make rice,
an all them good things we used to have
long time ago. Some folks say this buro
was got up to encourage us to steal, and
theD lock it all up in our burns, so the
white folks couldn't git it, but then they
aay Alr- Sherman's men was to tote the
keys of our buro. So that if we wers
mean enough to steal who knows wheih
er we would find it in the buro after we
put it thero.
Well, Mr. Editors, as I said before, I
dont understand this buro busioess. There
is one thing I do know, that we all have
tu stay here with our own while folks, and
as we have no larnin only field larnin, j
an no place to us6 that larnin only on our
white folks fields, we want no buros be- j
tween its an.I our white folkv They dont
blame us for being free, ns we never axed
to be free, but if they base to pav twenty
five millions of dollars to git us buros, j
they wont like it, and they are smart en 1
ough to take it out of our wages, 'speci
ally when the hnros was got for us. We
want to be friendly with our white foll.s
wc know we cant live at the North, and
if we could the sankees wouldn't let us
go there, and i.ow we want some rti es
laid down for us to go by, and everybody
else to let us and our folks alone and wo
will let them and their folks alone.
